 Shroomery News Service - Should We Censor Stories?

We frequently receive support tickets from people who have been in the news due to busts and arrests. Generally they're searching for themselves on Google, and find a full catalog of their transgressions on our BB. Needless to say this leads to some irate individuals, and we get numerous requests to edit or remove stories in the Shroomery News Service. Now I hate censorship as much as anyone, but I also hate to ruin someone's future prospects due to unthinking adherence to principle. So we need to decide on an official policy for handling these removal requests, and who better to ask than the community?

I would be for only removing the guy's name, or replacing w/ initials, but don't know if this is too much work.

Yeah I guess my poll was incomplete.  This issue doesn't come up so often than we need an ultra-streamlined process. Replacing names with initials is definitely a possibility.

For me that's not the question. Of course its public record.
The question is, is the value to the community, or whoever, of having a person's name attached to a damaging story outweighing the value of not being assholes and removing names from damaging stories.
I think the name adds practically no value to the story unless their a public figure, in which case this discussion is moot anyways.
I agree court and police procedings should be open to the public. The question is do we want to provide that information on this site in face of objection- Since ythan is apparently considering our views.
As I don't see any signifigant value to use in keeping the information on this site, I vote for editing or removing stories at administrator's discretion for small incidents.
This will allow those offenders who complete expungement procedings from having one more source of now-fictitious arrests being brought back to haunt them, though I think the benifits are evident to even those not elibible for expungement. The same arguments are made against expunging convictions for offenses, a practice I generally support.
If you also support expungement procedings then I'd think you should evaluate whether voluntary, discretionary removal of links by a private party should be more or less concerning to you than a govenrment that removes the information about what they've done from their archives for public purposes.

For the most part, screw 'em. I ended up on the front page of the newspaper several days in a row when I was in high school after getting arrested (and I was still a minor!) Such is life. I don't mind requests asking us to remove a person's name from the article. I also don't mind requests asking us to remove articles that the original source has retracted. Finally, I don't mind removing articles by request of the copyright holder. Beyond that, if somebody is embarrassed by their actions and are simply trying to clean the internet to save face... oh well, maybe they should have thought ahead before participating in behavior that may end in an arrest.
Perhaps make the news forum restricted from non-members preventing search engines from indexing the content?

I think it only shows that getting busted really can happen to anyone. It's a shame this issue has even come up. I wish the best to everyone and hope no shroomery member is ever in the news for a drug bust.
Btw it's not like your name is available on site. If your dumb enough it reveal it we deserve to know when you make it to the news.
I really think the ability to delete incriminating posts, after someone is busted is really more relevant than the ability to remove news articles.
I voted for remove it if the shroomery is the only source hosting the news article online.

I voted to remove it only if it's the last online source of it, but honestly I don't see that happening very often, and it IS public record. I kinda wanna change my vote to don't remove them. I guess out of compassion changing it to initials or something could work.

Maybe replacing with initials (except for public figures) could become a posting standard, which would mean less work for the mods? They wouldn't have to change them after the fact, and it would apparently cut down on the number of support tickets that would have to be dealt with. . .

I was PM'd by someone asking to remove a story because the Shroomery article was showing their name and the article link was removed.
I typed the names from that story and found nothing connected to the news story or the Shroomery in google or yahoo for 10 pages each.

I would vote to replace names or to edit out the names if it were an option and to do this at any request.
I think this is the policy that should be adopted because these people's futures could be in jeopardy as stated.
I also think that leaving the names there almost condones the busts and says that these people deserve to be branded the way they have been. Removing the names shows that we do not view them as criminals. Because of this implicit statement the policy would make, I would do it at any request regardless of whether or not the info is available elsewhere.
