Trich problems on harvest
    #7210430 - 07/22/07 05:27 PM (5 years, 9 months ago)

So I finished my first harvest. There was some trich issues towards the end of the first flush, so I harvested the first flush and trashed the casings. I thought I was in the clear because I harvested before the trich was too rampant, but the issue as resurfaced.

In the process of drying the harvest I've noticed that the stems of the fruits have developed trich on them. They aren't totally dry yet and parts of the stems have turned green. Is there anything I can do about this? Are they safe to eat when I fully dry them? Could I possibly mist them with isopropyl to help the situation?

Are you sure it is not just bruising? Swab the "green" areas on the stem, that are suspect, with a q-tip. If the color transfers to the q-tip, throw them out. If no color transfers, then it is only bruising. And if they are really growing trichoderma then you should not save them. The mycelium of the trich is growing through the stem and it is also white and impossible to remove. Although I dont believe that trich is harmful, there is no way to be sure that it is trich unless you have access to the tools and knowledge to identify that species.

Hrmm.... so i don't think this is trich, but it could be some other sort of contam, but I think it might just be bruising. I've done some experimenting and here is what I've come up with.

-I did the Qtip test and there was no transfer to the qtip.
-I soaked a piece of green stem in alcohol and dried it. There was no change in the green color, and the color didn't bleed into the alcohol.
-When I cut the cap off the stem for spore prints, the stem is light green where the cut is. I guess it appears to be bruising green.
-Green stem doesn't have any distinct odor to it.

So does this sound like they are ok to eat? Do stems ever bruise green?
The green color is only on the middle stem not on the caps.

yellow + blue = green... Sometimes the blue isn't so blue when it comes to cubes. I see bluegreen bruising often on them.

If you could post pics, it would help, but I'm pretty sure you're just seeing psilocin oxidation.

Some strains bruise blue and some strains bruise green. They seem to be fine. If it was green because of mold spores, they would have rubbed off.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but it comes up pretty high in searches and I thought photos might be nice to reassure newbies like me.

This is a photo of some rye grain that I was spawning to coir today. My heart stopped when I saw green spots like this all over the edges of the chunks I broke apart earlier, but I'm pretty certain now that it is just bruising:

The q-tip test produced no transfer, as you can see, and this doesn't look like what I've seen trich described as.  If anyone thinks my confidence is misplaced, please disabuse me   Otherwise, I'll edit the post later if I discover that this this was indeed trich.
