Give me the lowdown on brewing.
    #8174415 - 03/20/08 11:53 PM (6 months, 20 days ago)

I need a nice legal hobby, brewing sounds right up my alley. Here’s the problem, Beer is a recently acquired taste of mine. I don’t drink very often at all but I have developed a taste for beer, especially Budweiser. With that said, I don’t know a goddamn thing about beer, but im eager to learn.

How much initial investment am I looking at to make a home brew?
Is it smelly? Because the only place for me to put the carboys in my tv room.

I already have an 11.5L Carboy, and a brewery store near by. Where should I start? What would be a good ale, something that would suit my tastes? I already have an 11.5L Carboy, is that too small? What else would I need?

Are there any ultra newb teks out there? How long is the total process from start to drunk?

Its legal, give it away. But don't sale it..
Its taste will be no where around bud and it will be better for you..

How much initial investment am I looking at to make a home brew? less then 100.

Is it smelly? Not really. There is some smell.
Try to find a cool out of the light place.

No, 3gal should be fine or try to find a 1gal.
It just can be very heavy To pick up.

What else would I need?
A big pot
Spoon
a funnel
**Good water**
How long is the total process from start to drunk? 3-4 weeks

My recommendation would be to try one extract recipe just to get the feel, then do a mini-mash which is half and half extract and grain, then go all grain.

Budweiser is a lager and would be fermented at around 50 deg F which sounds like you couldn't do anyway. So you need to do an ale as you will be fermenting at room temperature of around 70 deg F.

If you want a lighter ale, try a pale ale recipe. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale made in Chico, CA is nice and you can use the yeast at the bottom of their bottle conditioned ale as a starter. You would theoretically not have to buy any yeast from the brew store, just a six pack of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Making a yeast starter for the next batch is always a good idea in any event as a big pitch of yeast makes things go faster on the ferment. Also once you get into making a starter then you don't have to buy more yeast if you did buy some from the store.

I would suggest you go with bigger carboys around 5 gallon. Sure, try with what you have for now but the equipment cost is about the same and making more means having more to drink.

The other consideration is bottling which is another step of work and having to have bottles available. Grolsch swing top with the rubber washers and ceramic caps are KEY. No capper or caps required and can be reused and washers replaced if needed. Buy the beer, save the bottle. Grolsch is a good lager too. Bud is well Bud.

I'd suggest expanding your tastes to include craft offerings to see if you even like real beer first, before you go investing money.

(especially since Bud is a lager, and you'll most likely start out with an Ale)

What do you suggest to give me an idea of what homebrew would taste like? Sam Addams Boston Lager?

Quick question.

Do Hops serve any purpose other than making the beer taste bitter? When they say the Beer would be sweet without it what do they mean? Like sugary sweet? Or some king of shitty tasting sweet? Just out of curiosity.

that’s where the question came from. He said the first set of hops is for taste and the second for aroma. But earlier he said its purpose is to make the beer bitter, and to cover the sweet malt. But what does sweet mean exactly? Like what would a beer taste like with no hops?

Like shit?

Hops are used to keep the beer, to add taste and aroma..They are also a member of the cannabis family..

It taste very sweet... Try a Trappest/ Abby(ie. GRIMBERGEN Blonde ale). They use vary little hops and is sweet.

Boston Lager is good, but there are lots of other things that would be better. Red Hook/Stone Brewing/Rogue etc...
