They are fly larva and they are actually harmless to humans. I know I had to have eaten a few at least. But I never notice. Oh well.
Dry in So Cal. But they are still creepin' round sprinklers and gardens....!

extra protein FTW
been below average rainfall all summer her in PA. with neglegable amount all august... all but dried up my best spot. seen a few on watered lawns but nothin special, mostly dime size caps fesh.
I'm hopin the seasons not quite over but is that that wishful thinking at this point? with a little bit of rain could they start poppin up agian?
I know other conditions play a large role in they're fruiting but just curious, what the latest you've found any decent subbs?

Oh yes, they are popping in Michigan right now...
Let me reiterate... it's been DRY here also, but at the community college I'm attending, there is new, well-watered sod. I found a few bigger than a golfball today. I filled a McDonald's carry out bag. I done fergot my camera before school again, so no habitat pics yet, but feast your eyes on this mycoporn...

You guys think it'd be worth going back tomorrow? It rained half the day here today, and as I said, they keep the new sod well watered. Would it be worth the 13 mile drive, or would I have better results Friday?
This weekend will be GRAND!!!

Well, since no one answered me, I went back today, and had another fine haul. It's been sort of chilly, too, it'd have probably been even sicker if it had been hot recently...

When do subbs usually stop fruiting? I know new sod has to be installed before haloween, so I'm guessing sometime around then?

I went a little crazy today... filled an entire burger king bag... they're not groing as big as they were the last two weeks, it's getting colder here. At least I'll have a decent stockpile to get through some of the winter...

I found some a couple weeks back, in Kansas. Haven't been searching for subs since, didn't have too good of luck anyhow.

Oh my goodness AgentClaret! You are taking loads of subbs. Maybe I ask which region of Michigan you live in? I still have not been able to find any around where I live (I do live in Michigan).

Oooo. I lived in Canton next to Westland for about 7 years. I just moved more north though =\, which is nice for picking, I have plenty pastures around me (Just sort of far from my house for a walk) both cow pastures and horse pastures, and tons of woods.
