I took horse manure and hay from a pasture i pick in and put it in an old flower bed behind my house that the previous owner had made(notice the brick and wood). Before i laid the manure/hay out i soaked it in a garbage bag so the poop water would soak into the hay. Im proud of this little flush its number two. The first flush were bigger but crappier quality but these had very study stipes, incredibly hard too pull up. Im gonna leave a few too drop spores and carry on the mycelium life cycle.

I hunt for subbs often but mostly find foes. But yesterday I on the way home I spotted some mushrooms that initially looked like foes but then upon closer inspection, some were growing in clusters, something which only subbs do. So I gather about half of them and take them home and spore print them. The spore prints are jet black (there is no doubt in my mind) but the shrooms that printed black just don't seem like the subbs I see here all the time. The stems aren't very much if at all thicker than those of the foes.
To complicate things more, there is a list of macrofungi in my county (Cook County, Illinois) that says Panaeolus Subbalteatus do not grow here. Granted it is a working list but still.
Is there anything else these could be besides subbs?

alrighty... first good find for me (i just started...)
found in a neighbor's lawn actually... several of these babies growing in clustered groups, but most were dried out because of the intense socal heat...
there were probably over 60 caps just sitting there in front of his lawn...
like the above poster they just don't seem to have that big of stems...
but then again it is really dry out here... i'm spore printing right now... pics in next post.

subbs on lawns at least, don't have big stems and i find that they are smaller than most foes and i most often find them growing solitary they dont have to be in clusters. but when i find a couple subbalteatus on a lawn there is usually a lot more. today sux its cold no sun and rain im just happy to have an oz of subbs from my other hunts.
just a lil tip by the way i'm in michigan

I wish I would have known this earlier.
After reading your post and before typing this I ran down the street to a known area that has what I thought were foes. After printing, they were dark black prints, wow. I wish I could have known this earlier. I have overlooked an ungodly amount of mushrooms thinking they were foes.

yea subbs on lawns tend to be much smaller than ones on compost or manure, as long as the prints are black they should be subbs, i would think subbs grow in illinios not sure why books say otherwise

well I went out today for a few hours, and only found a few Agaricus. The Pan Subbs are still eluding me so far this year. Might be time to head out to my friends farm.

After learning that subbs on lawns may have thin stems, I went out to my neighbor's lawn and collected roughly, I don't know the weight, there are about 50 caps, with the biggest one being just over 2 cm across and the longest stem being just under 8 cm. What is also cool is that I left a group of these tiny, TINY pins, I mean like 3 mm tall MAX, I can't believe I spotted them. So I hope those grow. I layed all the caps out on two pieces of white printer paper with the corresponding stems.
Hopefully some of these (or all) are subbs, because I didn't even pick a third of what was there. The Shroomery is one of the best communities, I love every one of you
