Yep, massive piles of stable shavings and horse poo. There were a few other species in there. Some Conocybes, Coprinellus, Bolbitius, and a few Panaeolus papillionaceus. The subbs were dominant though.
I'm gonna try transplanting some stem butts.

Just was walking around campus today and found a large patch of probable pan subbs. Alas, it's right in front of the police station so I don't know how or when I'm gonna harvest them.

this may not be relevant to this particular thread, but since subbs seem to be fairly common to hunters around my area and this time of year i've focused mainly on looking for those. i guess i've only been finding lookalikes since i've had a couple finds that i checked up on (with extreme care) and have sampled myself... but to no effect. are there any other actives that may be easier to find this time of year in north carolina? i need to hurry because in about a few weeks it usually dries up here and i doubt i'll be seeing alot of rain from the end of this month until late summer/early fall.
i'm still waiting on that greatly anticipated first active find. help a newbie out! i could always buy them once the rain stops but i'd find it to be an awesome experience to discover my own actives in the wild.

I downed my first cup of Pan sub tea about an hour back, and things are chill I'll be providing pics of notable finds in the future.
wjbaltimore, you may want to check out the lawns in your area this weekend, and remember to keep the black spored ones...If Pan foes get mixed in, it shouldn't be a big deal.

I have a pond and woods behind my house. I think it's wetlands. I live Southeast New Hampshire right on the coast. Anyone know if it's worth looking back there for subbs? Any other actives perhaps?

Subbs like horse pastures or well fertilized lawn as well as mulch beds but from what ive read mulch bed subbs are not as common.

In my experience, wetlands don't produce many mushrooms of any sort, and those that do show up are seldom of any interest. However, some of the bog fungi look funky, from what I've heard. I have come across morels, false morels, and aborted entolomas in woods at the edge of forested wetlands, but that's it thus far.

Okay, you guys, I got a problem...
My digital cam is having battery difficulties, so I can't provide pics right now...
i found this awesome new sod lawn with the most mushrooms I've ever seen growing out of it... I almost had a heart attack and an orgasm at the same time, because most of them looked like what Ive come to know as Subbs... now most of my subb exp. has come from pastures where I used to live, none around me now, so I've gotten into lawns...
the problem is, my friend and I made smoothies (from your recipe, Weillii, and it was REAL good...) out of 1.5 wet oz each.
Nothing happened. Now I am embarassed and shamed in front of my peers.
Am I stupid? What else looks like subbs? I know theyre not foes, I can tell the difference, and there were many foes in this yard I didnt bother to pick.
What I'm finding has the orange cap with a dark brown ring around it, reddish brownish stem, but getting lighter toward the cap. It has the lines winding up it. the spore prints are black.
What the hell have I got here? Are manure grown subbs just more potent? Could I be confused with antoher species? I've been wondering about panaeolus acuminatus, I don't know too much about that one.
This lawn was fresh sod, you could still see the seams in it, very wet, I dont think anyone lives at this house, but there are inground sprinklers and the sod is very mushy. all the stems tend to break as I pick them because they are so wet. I'm finding these subb looking ones, some very dark purple ones, and foes.
What the hell is going on? Help me redeem my self and my sanity...
I'll probably post some pics tomorrow if i get this battery shit straightened out...

Any chance these are subbs? Thought I might try this thread before posting a full-on ID request. This is from near Portland (B-town!) from a well groomed lawn. I have found others today here and there, some apear to be foes but if these are subbs I might go on a quest today, as there appear to be more than a few out. I guess it was the zonate cap that drew me to these, I was just walking home from the farmer's market and started seeing them everywhere. Naturally, I am printing the caps as we speak.

Stem almost looks like a Foes. If your print is jet black get back to us. If not then it is a foe or other Pan.
