i had this brainstorm last night...

all the subbs im finding this season are in a private school field. it hit me that the aeas im finding em in are in the middle of a soccer field and the outfield of a baseball diamond.

could this have something to do with cleats softening up the ground? i swear, theyre in all the areas of heavy wear...

im going back to check the actual football field today...

can you guys corroborate this at all?

I dont think thats why... It has to do with something being added to the substrate, like sod or manure.

Its possibly that wherever cleats have gone commonly, the ground needs to be fixed up or patched due to damage. They could be sodding these areas to remedy this.

good points, but i guess youd have to see the school. its a VERY small lutheran high school, they have one school bus. the field is decent, but theres a lot of bare patches, weeds, dandelions. the soil is mostly gray in the other areas, and I've never seen or smelled fertalizer. I played in this field when I was a child.

Frankly, I;m amazed theyre growing here at all, but I'm telling you, their concentrated on the outfield and center of the soccer field... it was just a thought...

So this year i'm hunting subs here in Michigan, I decided to look up some local horse farms and stables to ask if I can go hunting for a "mycology project", but then I was hit with a blunt object in the head and remembered ...My good friend blake HAS a horse farm! We got a heavy downpour yesterday so tomorrow i'm going out there to go sub hunting with him, he's never mushroom hunted before, and I am a beginner, but i've been reading some sub guides and i'm spore printing everything I find, any tips?

How do you guys dry your subs?

I'm not really hip to the whole desiccant thing, but I do have access to a de-humidifier. I've just been leaving 'em on a shelf in my closet, but it takes 2-3 days to dry em completely like that...

So people eat subs wet, too? I didn't think anyone did that... is it disgusting, and what would one use to chase/mix them with?

I just grind em up in the blender when they are wet. Use grapefruit juice and ya cant even taste em . I dry mine with a fan for a day or so then damprid packets, the kind that doesn't get any on em. Gets em cracker dry every time.

Dickenz- Sod means either the new patches of grass or the sod you pour onto the lawn. I have seen very few subbs grow from the latter, although subbalteatus mycelium has no poblem rippin' through it. They usually grow from the patches of pre-grown grass.

Agent Claret- I and my friends have eaten subbs straight after picking. They can taste bad but some people actually enjoy the taste of mushrooms. My friend from Britain actually wishes they were sold as on-the-go snacks.

I usually tea them by boiling on low until the spores are released and the water starts turning black. I then add either tea bags and honey or ice cubes.

could possibly have some of my first subb finds, i also live in michigan but on the southwest side, i found a bunch of mushrooms that are either subbs or foes, the gills were very dark but could be because of the rain and the stems were pretty thin so im not sure im printing them now

Yeah no lamp dude. Just fan dry for 2-3 days then use damprid you can buy it at home depot its nontoxic and they sell this kind that comes in a large bag. Put the bag in a large piece of tupperware then add the shrooms on top. The damprid never touches the shrooms at all its great they get cracker dry in about a day i mean fuckin crispy its great. Then mix your dose in the blender with grapefruit juice and make a nice subb smoothie. It sounds gross but its not at all. The taste of subbs is so mild the juice completely cuts the flavor. Its the only way i do it now. All ya drink/taste is black(from the spores) grapefruit juice.
