That's the tendency, however, it's not determinative. Spore print is determinative.
Check out the hanging gills on these subbs.

Subbs tend to become plane as they age - naturally, the gills will 'hang' when this occurs.

Good explanation scout! Not all subbalteatus are above the margin and not all foes are below! it just helps tho! the only way to know foes and subbs is to get out there and start picking and printing each by the hundreds.
After 5000 subbs i can now tell them from across the street. Its good and bad cuz i stop my car a lot more often...

yes i should have been more specific mature subbs with caps that are plane have gills below the margin as stated about by scout most of the ones i find are not though. I dont find that many fully mature ones.

I noticed some recently re-sodded lawn in Berkeley today while wandering around and decided to check it out since all other grass areas I've hunted have produced only foes. Sure enough, I found a dozen or so subbs! Knew right when I saw them. Fucking finally.
I'm gonna have to look for some new developments where they are sodding the area. Better yet, maybe I'll go buy some sod and keep it fertilized, lol.

that was my idea, get some sod, manure, and water it everyday...
where can you get sod? i mean, i know, a sod farm, but anyplace like lowes? the housing market sucks in michigan and no ones building anything new... therefore no new lawns.

Man, no luck finding any for me yet. Still too cold at night I think. Or I am just looking in the wrong spots.

Some fairly mangled subbs I found at a new patch. I found a few decent ones last night, but it was too dark to get a picture. So I picked them.
