I brought back lots of hay from the area, although the temperatures are a bit low right now I hope to have some fruiting in my back yard in a week or so. I will keep you guys posted. Out of all the piles that we could find this was the only hay that actualy were growing them. You could feel the heat radiating off of this hay pile for some reason. None of the other piles in the area were growing any at all and they didnt feel warm. I suspect that the fruiting temperatures need to be around 50 degrees during the night. The temperature here has been a constant 33-40 so its a bit low. We ate these the other night and had a very good time. Very colorful and a good body high. Makes you feel very happy!

The heat could have been due to the fact that that hay pile was decomposing more than the others. Decomposition generates heat in hay piles.
The subb experience is the shit.

Landsnokler I think you are correct because you could literally feel the heat off only this pile and none of the others. I have a strong feeling that I will find them in the other hay piles but only when it gets a little warmer. It was interested. These subbs would only grow in the cracks and some of them were burried by hay so it didnt seem like they needed much sun light.

Mushrooms do not necessarily need sunlight to grow... Well they do not use photosynthesis to grow, the sun provides the right temperature for them to grow. Just for an example i have grown cubensis in complete darkness of a closet with no windows and no lights only using heat and humidity to create the right conditions. Just letting you know!!!

Thanks for the info. I heard that subbs need a grow light when growing them indoors once they start pinning though..

the light is merely a trigger to induce pinning it doesn't need to be bright.

The light gives them a direction to grow... When you grow mushrooms in the dark they grow all twisted and in different directions...

Oh that makes sense now. Thanks for the info. The other question I had was if somone wanted to get them growing in their yard. I know they only like well fertilized yards. So what kind of fertilizer should I do my lawn with? Will some kinds hurt the shrooms? How about moss kill. I have very green nice grass but lots of moss.

Well when they say they grow in fertilized lawns i think they are refering to lawns with manure in the soil!

Yeah usually literal manure is on or in the lawn but sodded lawns also work!
I have also heard though that subbs DO need a form of natural light to pin and that your christmas lights arent enough. It says on Erowid.org under a guide written I believe by John Allan that, "Grow lights are a necessity because they seem to emit the right amount of light that is necessary for the spawning to fruit."
Thats copied and pasted out of the text. From here: http://www.erowid.org/plants/mushrooms/mushrooms_cultivation24.shtml
I dont believe its true though that its a NECESSITY.

Ok so does fertilizer that you buy kill subbs then? SO if i know the people use that kind of fertilizer I know they will never grow there? Should I not use that pellet kind on my lawn then if I want to grow some? Also those ink caps and the other weird mushrooms that I had pictured growing in hay, anyone know the requirements for them, such as temperature, humidity, and such. It might give me and other people an idea of when the subbs might be popping up if you can compare the requirements for those other shroomies. Sorry if i was rambling some how I got really high.. lol

I dont think so the lawns ive picked subbs on and weiliis always get manicured and fertilized twice a year.

They use that pellet shit like they fucking arerate the soil and sprinkle that pellet fertilizer. Sometimes after the lawns get fertilized the caps start fruiting a bunch.

Ink caps will fruit much more quickly than subbs, although subbs are a fairly quick fruiting mushroom. Inky caps arn't that great of an indicator, because they seem to require less moisture, in other words if you go out in the morning, you could find ink caps that popped up due to the higher nighttime humidity, not necessarily enough for subbs to grow, and then later that day the inks will be completely inked out. It just comes down to checking often, and gaining experience on when the subbs like to fruit in your area. Panaeolina foensecii in lawns is an indicator of proper conditions for subbs to fruit, but for your hay bales, you'll just have to check, as there are no spriknlers like there are for lawn subbs.
