Underground Casinos

My friends have recently stumbled upon a small number of underground casinos dealing strictly Poker/tournaments. I spoke with one friend about it who mentioned several in the news getting raided. If I was in one while it got raided, what kind of charges could I expect? I have no criminal record and would find any criminal charge to really mess up my future. Remember, these places take a 10% up to $10 rake/pot. I don't like the idea of an unlit parking lot, only one driving entrance/exit - one escape route from the place from inside. A raid would keep me stuck in that place, very hard to get out. Anyone have any stories to add to this? Should I just stick to home games and real casinos?

What is the appeal? Why not just go to legal casinos?

Regardless of if you were to be there when the place got raided, why would you want to be where they are raking 10% of the pot in an operation that sounds shady and dangerous? You can just as easily get scammed for 10% rake of the pot on a shady operation like Full Tilt from the comfort and safety of your house!
As for being charged, as technically gambling is illegal on the internet in the US, yet they let Full Tilt, Poker Stars etc run real money tables with US players. If they ever filed charges against all the US players, they would have to build more prisons and make more money locking people up. Hmm...

Ok, I'll get my attorney on this right away.
I'll tell him someone in an unknown city, unknown province/state, and unknown country needs to know about the law and penalties related to gambling there.
I'm sure he'll get back to me w/ top notch advice. Should I tell him to check every locality in the world? That will only take a few years...

Why don't you go to your legislature's homepage and find the law, look up what charges you could expect and what penalties you might get? In the US, a good place to start is at the state legislature, which will probably be the law you'll encounter.

Some localities acknowledge that poker is a game of skill, not of luck. As such it isn't technically gambling, but rather a sport.
Check your local laws, but I doubt they would charge the players with anything. OTOH there are plenty of laws and regulations they could charge the operators with.

You should be playing stakes with an average pot over $200 if you're paying that rake. 5% is reasonable rake for a cash game, 10% is not.
10% as a tournament fee is normal, however.

what i would be more worried about, given the situation you described, is the game getting robbed at gunpoint.
cops most likely wont shoot in a raid unless given a reason, but you never know about a thief.
many underground casinos have a small arsenal of weapons stashed somewhere, just in case a robbery does happen. you dont want to be there if bullets start flying
dont keep your whole bankroll on you, or more than anything you can lose. but if you're gambling, you should already know this
may be a good idea to have a money stash buried deep within your car if you feel the need to carry rebuys with you. this is also good because if you bust out, the walk to the car can help clear your head.
remember, rule #1 about illegal casinos is that you really have nothing protecting you and your money
oh yeah, and 10% rake is fucking bullshit.

this post sums up most of my concerns. some reasons gambling is illegal is due to the perception of the crime associated with it. an underground casino cant really provide peace of mind in security against violent muggings (at worst) or a cheater. i would also agree that 10 percent rake is pretty high to give to the house when you can play cheaper and safer online and at the casino.
As far as legal troubles if you are caught in the raid, you wont be hit as hard as the guy running the joint, you may even have an alibi if you can consolidate with your other players that the game was not for money but for sport. im sure the owner and operator of the gambling joint will get the books thrown at him but not so much for gambling but also selling alchohol without a licence and fire code violations.
i doubt youll see much legal trouble as the judge is probably playing on weekends with his buddies. and if you have a clean record. Just remember if you are rolled up in a raid be compliant and as polite as the situation offers. if the paddywagon rolls up and dosent have room for everyone the pigs will fill it with assholes before they put the nice guy in.

1 more point for me.
