King Oyster - First grow from isolate - Photo Pictorial
    #8149297 - 03/15/08 12:34 PM (6 months, 19 days ago)

I'll start this thread off by mentioning that I obtained a king oyster print. From there I isolated and isolated and knocked up a few jars of spawn. Now is the time to bulk it and grow it out.

I would like to do it out either of these two ways:

Nutrient enriched sawdust sterilzed in autoclavable bags; fruit from bags.

Nutrient enriched sawdust sterilzed and spawned in tubs as seen in another individuals post.

Tell me why I should do it the way you choose. If you have an alternate method, post it. I'll grow it out to the spec of the vote.
Which way would you grow out your Kings?
You may choose only one
Autoclavable Bags
Spawned to Tubs

Where will you fruit the kings? This matters! Tubs? Are you talking about mono-tubs or tubs that will be placed into a growth chamber.

I have never myself grown king oyster! Though I have the estimated growth parameters that are given in books. They require less than 1000ppm to grow normal fruit bodies. Some strains probably less. Therefore you should have a chamber that exchanges at at a rate of 5-6 exchanges per hour. Bags and tubs are probably your best bet. Reason! depends on what type of fruit body you are going for. If you want a fruit body like similar to that you see sold in the store (large base with a cap) you should fruit them on a horizontal surface. Those grown from suspended bags tend to look more shelf like.

Solution! grow them in bags. That way if you want to poke holes and grow them off localized vertical sites on the bags side in a more shelf like form you can. If you want the more common stubby form with a cap, just pull back the plastic to expose the top and fruit them on a horizontal surface.

I think they prefer a casing so I would fruit them horizontally myself. I don't think it is necessary though with some strains.

Sorry I didn't say anything about the mono-tubs. Mono-tubs are only used for co2 tolerant species. The king oyster is not one of these.

The yield will be much better on the sawdust.

Yidaki,

Are you comparing enriched sawdust to straightup sawdust? Explain yourself. (I'm not sure if you read all of my thread, that's why i'm asking) If not, I have only mentioned using enriched sawdust in my thread thus far.

I have seen some of the most delicious and best eringii come off of sawdust. But there is more to the method of growing eringii than just fruiting it like other oyster.

If you suppliment the sawdust, you have to keep it totally sterile during colonization, so that rules out bins. You'll want to use filter patch bags.

^^ 2 jars knocked up from isolate. Jars were shaken 2 days prior to photo, notice the quick recovery!

Two photos of the same bag colonizing using one jar of spawn. Perhaps a waste using so much, but looking for success on the first few runs. The bags are colonizing on shelves in a slightly heated closet. Some of the moisture is evaporating leaving the top sawdust to dry. Thinking about putting the bags in a cooler to avoid moisture loss. Tell me what you think. I know the photos look like garbage.

Tip, While fruiting, pick all but a few most vigor pins.

Another tip, once you see pins, drop temp by 5-7 degrees for better fruits.

I like to raise the temperature myself. 50-60 for pin initiation and on up to 70 to finish up the flush.

The ultimate jar lid! Drill one hole, easily reusable...no rust.

One side of the bag.

The other side of the bag.

The bag in its fruiting environment. Do not mind the wet floor.

they seem to do better aesthetically when fruited horizontally. you get those classic robust fruits with an even stipe. i personally like mine even enough that i can slice them thinly lengthwise to get whole cross section pieces for most of my dishes. i want to do outdoor bed cultures this fall when the weather gets wet again.

Photo quality is horrible. I'll have to figure out how to take the clearest shot when I have more time. You can see a small fruitbody. The top of the bag is dry. There are a few things I can obviously improve on the next batch. I'll be dunking this one for sure.

The flash was disabled, now shot's look much clearer. Do any of you have any ideas as to why fruits are only appearing in one small section of the bag? The top of the bag was chopped off for FAE. The top layer of sawdust was allowed to dry (no misting) No holes (X's cut) in the bag anywhere else. Let's hear your opinions. I'm thinking of dunking and cutting holes around the bag in an effort to force more fruits.
