Thanks for the links.

I'm still not too worried though, looks like most of the lookalikes seem to have a striated margin. All the amanitas I pick look just like the Amanita muscaria subsp. flavivolvata pictures.

Emotional dampening and analgesia is not the issue here. Neither of these descriptions is even relevant to mystical experience, spontaneous or "occasioned" by psychedelics.
It's lack of dependability for mystical experience versus psilocybian species is the intended meaning, not for any type of alteration of consciousness. Ancient Hebrews did not eat fungal life-forms as far as I know and Talmudic writings, while certainly not my area of expertise, in all likelihood would reject their consumption. Rain or no rain, the rhizomorphic symbiosis with pine, fir and other related conifer trees is problematical in Judea.

perhaps in a few thousand years:

Ancient Protestants did not take cannabis as their law and
religion both forbid it, and ancient Anglo-Saxons did not
eat mushrooms as they were mycophobes...

not to say that the Hebrews did eat mushrooms. but in all
times religion and law are want to be contradicted,
especially by sects, cults, rebels, deviants and those
who are starving or at the bottom of the system, wandering, poor, bored...

i'm glad the freke video showered smiles and wonder upon
several of you

I find John Allegros assertion that 'Jesus' was literally the mushroom itself interesting.

You are thinking with a modernist, post-enlightenment mentality. You KNOW what the sun and moon and stars are and that the world is not flat, what diseases are, what DNA is and what a thermonuclear bomb is. The ancients lived in a state of unknowing with regard to the empirical world which must have been compensated for by a much heightened inner world. Boredom is a modern problem. Ancients had little leisure time in which to experience boredom. Conversely, moderns have so much going on externally and are so addicted to sensory input that their inner world is desolate. I can't remember the last time I met someone who was open to the inner world through dreams, visionary experience, poetry, music, philosophy or spiritual practice and who was therefore fairly closed to the external world of computer games, Las Vegas, porn, spectator sports and conspicuous consumerism. In a word, the Matrix as it really exists.

'...recent scholarship about the Eleusinian Mystery Rites, plus the works of Freke and Gandy about the Pagan nature of the Christian mythos, might lead one to consider the eucharistic bread as being infected by the fungus Claviceps paspali, a less toxic form of ergot fungus (possibly used at Eleusis) than Claviceps purpurea which was responsible for ergotism (St. Anthony's Fire) and the principle ingredient in LSD-25.'

'The Eleusinian Mysteries (Greek: Ἐλευσίνια Μυστήρια) were initiation ceremonies held every year for the cult of Demeter and Persephone based at Eleusis in ancient Greece. Of all the mysteries celebrated in ancient times, these were held to be the ones of greatest importance. These myths and mysteries, begun in the Mycenean period (c. 1500 BC), were a major festival during the Hellenistic era and later spread to Rome.

The rites, cultist worships, and beliefs were kept secret, as initiation was believed to unite the worshipper with the gods and included promises of divine power and rewards in the afterlife.[1] There are many paintings and pieces of pottery that depict various aspects of the Mysteries. Since the Mysteries involved visions and conjuring of an afterlife, some scholars believe that the power and longevity of the Eleusinian Mysteries came from psychedelic agents.'
