Incredible site you guys. I hope to be out hunting the good stuff soon as. Heaps of field mushrooms this week (N. of Wellington) but nothing else. A mate told me that the season doesn't really kick off till the first frost, is that true?

No, not really. It depends alot on where you live. I would expect to see subs in my area over the next few weeks, when the second big rains come.

Wow, this has to be the longest and boring-est NZ thread I've ever seen.
Good luck pickers, my advice: research past NZ threads. Everything (everything) has been discussed before

it could almost stand to be deleted and restarted in a little while.
i think the idea of no seasonal/regional threads until the first find is a good one. oh well. good luck and fair weather my kiwi friends.

Just because we arent posting pics of subs doesnt mean this thread isnt justified. People are keeping it updated including myself of where they have or havnt found any mushrooms.

Hurray!!!!!
I found a mushroom that i thought remarkebly looked like a sub growing in the bark mulch stuff in the little reserve next to my house. So, i picked it, did a spore print, and the spore print was purple! Woot, im gonna go have another look around there soon, i found it growing next to a log, just sort of under it, sticking out. I dont know what it is exactly, its got brown gills and a light brown top, its relativly flat and quite soft, had a white stem and about 7cm tall, cap was about 4cm across. Ill try and get a picture of some if i can find more.

West auckland.
Just found some more shrooms growing about a meter away from where this one was. They arent the same type, they sort of had a cap that withered downward to make it rather pointy instead of flat. Im doing spore print on it soon.

Please dont shut this thread down, Its providing good information for new hunters and everyone is keeping good posts on the weather conditions and such. For the non-nz viewers nz is currnetly having a "indian" summer/autumn at the moment, and im sure the extended warmth will result in bigger flushes when the weather finally does roll in. On a side note, i found 4 pretty little subs today on a walk with the dog, had to be sneaky as was with people who would freak if i was picking mushrooms ( slight of hand is handy ) will post pic of find tonight. Good luck Kiwis!

Yeah grreeeat posts (read me n00b):
Quote:
5. Do not make threads or posts discussing or reporting the weather. This includes complaining about the weather, asking if the current weather is "good for shrooms", or how long to wait after rain fall to go hunting. As a general rule of thumb, if it has rained within the last 2-3 days, and the temperatures are correct for the type of mushroom you're looking for, then *yes* it is possible that the mushroom you are looking for is growing. Threads or posts that are made for the discussion of weather will be locked, edited, or deleted.

a few pages? 6 pages, 112 replies and what ONE find? There are rules designed to stop useless clutter, you should read them:
Quote:
3. Do not ask what mushrooms can be found growing in your state or immediate area. This information is easily found in the Mushroom Hunting FAQ and/or has been posted at least once elsewhere on the net. Also see this document: http://www.shroomery.org/8461/Which-mushrooms-grow-wild-in-my-area
4. Do not ask about current finds in your area. These posts have been flooding the forum at the start of seasons. If you're curious about if mushrooms are growing in your area, get out there and look! Mushrooms don't read the books. Sometimes they fruit outside of season. There is no set date for any season, only vast generalizations. Your best bet is that if it's close to the season for the mushroom you are looking for, you just might find some.
6. No asking when or where mushrooms, or a specific mushroom species will grow. This includes, asking what habitat a mushroom[s] can be found- or their preferred fruiting conditions. This can be very simply answered by using the "search posts" feature: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/search.php
7. No requesting or revealing specific locations. Locations NOT allowed: Business names, government buildings, shopping centers, pasturelands, when specific directions are given to a location, or any place with an address. Use common sense about what might be considered a specific location. When in doubt, do the moderators a favor and just don't say it. If your post gets edited then it was deemed unacceptable. If you have problems with this please send a private message to the moderator in question.
8. No asking for hunting partners. The Hunting Forum is for learning, sharing, teaching and identification purposes, we are not a hook up of any kind. If you would like to request a hunting buddy, make a topic about it in the Gathering Forum. You will gain access to the Gathering Forum after being a member for more than 60 days and when you have reached more than 100 posts.

Sounds like a good way to give away your locale. That is even if you have the local paper. Otherwise you'd have to go to the effort of buying one or an out of town one. After a hunt I'm sure that's the last thing you feel like doing

in the first 4 pages of this thread mushyhunter said:
- haha oh i cant wait for this years mushroom season! I live near a creek/stream and the local council has covered the whole place(its kind of like, a little reserve) with wood chips! Its literally a jump over my fence and there woodchips everywhere. Ive already seen mushrooms growing in it, which is a good sign considering how early in the year it is. I say a month or 2 and imma be seeing some nice shroomz worthy of eating
- Hey, what are the most common species in the Psilocybe/any 'magic' genus that grow in NZ, specifically west Auckland/Auckland?
- If there popping up around my house do you think they'd(MAGIC mushrooms, not plain old ordinary ones) be popping up in the bush yet?
- The rain just cant come soon enough. Damn.. im sure its been weeks since we've seen any... maybe just my imagination? im not sure.
- damn it, it basically hasnt rained in auckland in weeks!!
- I cant wait till i go on google and find on the weather forecast 'heavy rain; heavy rain; heavy rain' lol! That'd be a real treat, it seriously is so dry in auckland atm, my lawn is starting to crack and the creek has dried up. Damn it, why is it never like this when you actually want it to be but when you want mushies to start popping up its strait sunshine with no clouds for weeks on end.
- [Picture of weather forecase: warm days, sun and showers]
epic win!
- WEll dude, any rain is good, it seriously hsnt rained in so fucking long its not even funny. It's changed now and it should be harder rain on monday but less/no rain on sunday. Im fine by that
- why the fuck do aussies hang around in the NZ mushrooms thread? lol...
- na cause your jealous of our awesome shroomz.
- mate no body cares if your taking pic's of mushrooms or anything else, they'll prolly just think your doing some study or some shit.
And wtf are they gonna do about it, 'OMG HES LIEK TAKING PICS OF MUSHROOMS CALL DA COPS!'?
lol!
- Damn how many days after its rained would you guys say its good to go have a looksy in the bush? The mulch/bark reserve near my property hasnt sprung any up and it had plenty of mushrooms when it rained like, 3 weeks ago, but unsure of how long after it had rained.
Its been 2 days, rekon it would be a good day tomorrow? Bark is still wet.
mushyhunter

Quit fagging up the thread with your massive quotes. If it matters to you that much you'll undoubtibly go back, prune all your posts down, then complain to a mod/admin. In the meantime do you care to fuck off? Whilst many of us may not be contributing in a great way to the thread we aint being dickheads. You on the other hand...
