What are the species I'm likely to find in Dunedin? So I can find some pictures and ID info?

How do you pick your shrooms? Lots of people reckon you should cut them and not damage the base is that actually true, does it make any difference? Or will they just grow back again, because it takes ages to pick them like that, but I dont want to damage them. I get paranoid though in some places haha

mandruku: From these forums I've heard that theres alot of P. subaeruginosa (gold/copper tops) in the pines and bark gardens, and P. semilanceata (liberty caps) growing in pastures down south, you might want to try looking up some of the archives on here. If the subs are common they'll be quite easy to find on woodchip gardens (not bark).

It won't matter if you damage the mushroom, just pick/snip/slice/cut it at the base to avoid pulling out a big chunk of mycelium attached to the stem base. You don't need scissors, just as long as you cut it out clean. I find a stanley knife useful for cutting through swathes of closely packed subs cleanly and quickly.

Cool thanks, I actually meant the mycelium when I said base not very clear though. Stanley knife sounds like a good idea.

This site: says Panaeolus subbalteatus has been recorded in New Zealand, Is it the kind of thing that "might" be here like Copelandia cyanescens. Does anyone think it's possible? I think it would be really good if we have a summer shroom as well even if they aren't very potent!

You will need to look around stables or land with horses grazing, and a lack of super phosphate.
Sandy areas seem the best with ample rainfall ,coastal dunes maybe and all of the above cheers.

P. subaeruginosa and P. semilanceata: are there any nasty ones that could be mistaken them for?

Hey, what are the most common species in the Psilocybe/any 'magic' genus that grow in NZ, specifically west Auckland/Auckland?

I just wanna know so that when i go mushie hunting in the bush i have a fair idea of what to pick and what to not pick

Apparently Psilocybe Aucklandii is in the hills in west auckland, there are definitely Psilocybe subaeruginosa in the woodchip gardens out west and everywhere I've been in Auckland, they're probably less common in the bush though and apparently the weraroa are around too though perhaps not as common.

The subaeruginosa are the easiest I think, and if you find them, the things to watch out for are a white/offwhite stem and blue bruising. Also the peak of the season is probably May-June.

Hmm ok.. i was thinking of taking a stroll through the *bush in aucland* sometime this week, would any aucklandii or subaeruginosa be growing in there yet? I have found alot of different types of mushrooms growing out next to my house which is a little reserve covered in woodchip, but none are 'magic' so to speak. If there popping up around my house do you think they'd(MAGIC mushrooms, not plain old ordinary ones) be popping up in the bush yet?

That sort of brings me to my next point.. if mushrooms, ones that ARENT magic, are popping up around the place, does that mean magic ones will be too, and that i just havnt found them? or do certain species start popping up months before the magic ones do?

thanks

Yesterday in the pines I picked ONE australianii (still no camera so meh.. no proof)

The Psilocybe Aucklandii that I picked was in some moss off a gravel forestry road.
Up a hill.
