It's interesting being a part of the internet-community generation and critically analyzing human-relationships/emotions. Has anyone ever posted something on a forum, which yr really interested in, only to see it quickly drop to the bottom of the post-list with seven views and even few have responded? Or how about noticing that you've dropped in on someone's "top friends" list on Myspace or Facebook? Yeah, granted it's easily made-fun-of-able, it's only Myspace, but to what extent? It's an unfavourable emotion.
I think it's interesting--I don't consider myself an online-junkie, but I've felt these examples before. I think we don't give the internet enough credit when it comes to human relationships/emotions. Online dating sites, games like "Second Life" and other MMORPGS where one can semi-actually live out another life. Can virtual relationships be comparable to real relationships? Virtuality is the next/new metaphysics.

It's probably hard to imagine for the old timers here that we're a generation that has been raised alongside the development of the internet and we are the first to be able to talk to all kinds of people from all over the world.

nothing compares to raw human interaction.
the internet is just another outlet. email compared to letter writing, aim compared to phone call
to some it offers a sense of security, some actually feel more confident through virtual communication.
we are all wired together anyways.
who cares if you made the top friends list, its all bs.
just a way of showing others what you may already be showing that one person...oh the falsetto.

I don't necessarily agree with that. What's more "real" about "raw human interactions"? Human relations are the same, emotions are the same, only the forms of manifestation differ. Frankly, I can't see a definite difference between the internet and "real life", the internet is as real as anything else. The falsetto you're talking about occurs with or without the internet. Being in a top friend list can apply to real life as well, there are people who like to show off and this is not the invention of myspace or AIM... Real human connection can happen in any way, it is not guaranteed by face to face interaction. I believe that we're not even really aware of the so many ways in which we can use the internet, it's a new level of consciousness that we're just beginning to explore. The resources seem to be unlimited. People can become friends online, share ideas, inform themselves and even fall in love.

agreed but still
cyber sex compared to real sex.
the internet is just like another world. We can see it and feel from what we see. We process emotion and thought from pixels on a screen, but it is limiting in many ways compared to real life experience.
I am not diminishing its power of connecting people. I am more focused on how some aspects of it make people petty.
Like I said it is another world, so the range of happenings is just as wide as it is here. Happiness --> Sadness. taste the rainbow

Being unable to have face to face interaction can heighten other aspects of who we are and the ways in which we can communicate. It's a test for being creative and ingenious. Like you, I think we're exploring a new face of reality. And that it is far from being limiting. It depends on one's ability to create new experiences and also one one's ability to understand them. All these experience are processed by our minds, so the power of making something out of then depends only on how much we're ready to take in. It is true that until now our minds might be more tuned into processing what you call "real life experiences", but this is only a matter of adjusting and adapting to the new. Who's to say that in the future we won't be able to have even stronger experiences through the internet?

I will have to disagree. "It" doesn't make people petty, it is always ourselves who do that. That's a big difference and I think it's good to outline it because the conclusions will be different too. You can't blame the internet for people's flaws. You can't say that acid gives you bad trips since the bad trips are created by our minds. You can't way that guns kill, because it is us who maneuver them.

i know you're basically saying it is all in the mind.
I understand what you have written.
You obviously love the internet as do I.
At this point in time, i still find it to be limiting. It only interacts with sight, sound (if applicable), and touch if you include your mouse and keyboard.
and no matter what you state my bottom line is that no matter how much philosophy you throw, the internet/ a computer/ cell phone, does not ever replace a human being.
plus giving something that is powered by electricity such prestige might just be the downfall.

I'm an internet addict and I find it embarrasing because it's contrary to everything I believe in. But at the same time it's consistent with my experience of the world, which also drove me to the theoretical position which causes me to hate the internet and all other forms of totally mediated interaction. It's a funny cycle.
One of these days I'm going to have to take an internet 'fast.'
