Fla. warns schools of drug-filled gumballs

WKMG LOCAL 6 NEWS

ORLANDO, Fla. -- School officials and parents in Florida are being warned about narcotic-filled gumballs and candy-flavored drugs containing heroin and methamphetamines that drug dealers are offering to young children.

"This a grave problem and shows to what lengths drug dealers will go," said Robert Tricquet, president of the Florida Association of School Resource Officers.

Attorney General Bill McCollum and the Florida Association of School Resource Officers released a consumer advisory warning parents, teachers and school administrators of the candy-drug trend.

The candy-flavored drugs, particularly methamphetamines, heroin and marijuana are circulating around the United States, often enticing younger children, officials said.

Flavors can include strawberry, chocolate, cola and others.

The flavoring reduces the bitter taste of the drug and does not affect the potency of the drug. Children may mistake the drug for candy pop rocks.

"These dangerous drugs are being cleverly disguised and distributed among our children and we must work together to educate them about these very grave risks," said Attorney General McCollum.

The report warned of "cheese" or a form of heroin combined with Tylenol-PM caplets.

Known as starter heroin, "Cheese" caused the death of at least 21 Texas teens in 2005 and the numbers of related arrests continue to rise.

"Cheese" is cheap and highly addictive and law enforcement believes its use and abuse will quickly spread throughout the country.

Also, reports of gumballs filled with marijuana and narcotics packaged or disguised as candy or other more enticing objects have raised concern from Florida law enforcement.

What, did someone over in OPD finally receive their microgram in the mail? Those articles are like 5+ months old. These idiots need to stay current with this shit, and realize that most of this shit is isolated, or else it would state otherwise in the journal. Fucking idiots, I swear.

You know, i have never even heard of a drug dealer specifically targeting kids. Why would you? How much money can an elementary school kid possibly have? Almost all of the instances you hear of when a kid is caught on/with drugs is when it comes from their parents.

Dealers don't target kids. Adults that want to ban drugs pretend that they do so people don't give them the "Why are you telling adults what to do in their own homes?!?" line.

Yea, they're just throwing their expensive product at kids like candy.

Anyone with half a brain should see that elementary school kids don't have the money for drugs, except maybe weed. This makes about as much sense as handing out $20 gas cards to middle schoolers. Most of the drug dealers I know are shrewd businessmen and go after the people who are already hooked and have the means to get their fix; "Get you a couple good J's (junkies, not joints) with a job and you're set to start finding real clientele."

Even if they are shrewd, all of the successful dealers I know would NEVER sell to a little kid, 16 was what seemed like the unofficial cutoff. Now I have known 2 people who claimed to be 'dealers' go as low as 14, but these people were nothing but junkies trying to get their fix by skimping their buyers and using their minuscule 'profit' to get themselves a sack.

Do you know what happened to these 2?

They got the shit beat out of them by the 'real' dealers for "doing bad business".

Vodka has a "bad" taste(all opinion) So why aren't Smirnoff and others getting the same shit said about them? Like an adult can't mix vodka and lemonade themselves? It's all about convenience for the customer.

I'm not sure if I really thought that cheese was rotten milk hence the need to question what I thought?
