A police raid on a gardening supply store has unearthed a suspected marijuana growing operation which police say is part of a large drug-trafficking network.
Two men inside Tops Gardening in the 1100 block of 40 Avenue N.E. are facing multiple drug charges from the bust Tuesday.
Three other men walking into the store during the raid were also arrested. Inside the business, police found marijuana and cocaine they estimated to be worth 770,000 and $10,000 respectively. Cannabis resin worth $2,500 and $60,000 in cash were also seized.
Drug packaging material was found along with $250,000 worth of equipment that could be used to illegally grow marijuana. Another warrant was executed at a home on Springmere Way in Chestermere.
Trieu Son An, 47, of Chestermere, is charged with one count each of possession of marijuana for the purpose, possession of property obtained by crime, possession of crack/cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, and possession of cannabis for the purpose. Paul Dao, 53, of Calgary, is charged with possession of marijuana for the purpose.
Three other Calgary men were arrested Tuesday, as they arrived at the business. Som Vang Khamvongsa, 48, Kieu Loan Thi Le, 42, and John Harry Schulz, 51, each face one count of possession of marijuana for the purpose.
The raid was made by the District 5 Response Team, along with the Southern Alberta Marijuana Investigation Team (SAMIT) and Integrated Proceeds of Crime (IPOC). The District 5 Response Team was formed in 2007 to target drug activity within the northeast. Since then, officers have seized more than $1 million in drugs including cocaine, heroin, ecstasy, morphine and marijuana, in excess of $150,000 in cash and stolen property.
Several firearms have been taken off the streets and more than 100 criminal charges have been laid against numerous offenders.

I wonder if the three guys walking into the store actually had cannabis in their possession or if they're being charged merely because they walked into a place where it was being held.
