Just got a cat! Have some questions..
    #7983466 - 02/05/08 07:15 PM (5 years, 3 months ago)

So I just got a cat! She's a little over a year (or so the Vet thought), all grey, really beautiful. I haven't come up with a name for her yet, but in due time.

Anyway, I brought her home last night, and since then she's either been hiding under the bed, or behind the couch. Is this normal? I'd seem to think it is, but I just want to be sure.
She comes out every so often and lets you pet and rub her, no problem. I was hoping to get a playful cat, rather than a shy nervous one. Is this just a cat getting used to her new environment?

She sounds like a shy kitty, but don't worry - she'll warm up to you soon.

Yes it is normal
I recently added another kitty to my home and she hid on and off for about a week
Do you have a picture you can show us of your new baby?

if you need a name, my friends cat, who recently passed away from old age, had an awesome name...they called it 'Chiefly'

I always thought that name was cool...stoners of course, and it was all grey too, with a gimp ear...

peace

All cays do that she just needs to get use to her new surroundings.
If you have a dog or kids it might take a little longer than normal.

Na, it's just me here in the apartment. When she's not under the bed she seems like an awesome cat. Sits on my lap and purrs for a little bit, then explores a bit, and its back to hiding.

She just needs to get used to her new environment. Give it a few weeks. Just leave her be and don't force her to come out.

Also, please let your cat go outside.  Keeping a cat indoors is like forcing a bird to live in a cage.  Cats like the sky, trees and the wind  :sun:

cute cat. that is perfectly normal behavior until she gets used to the new digs.

on rare occasions, however, some cats will never warm up to humans and will always be shy/lethargic, usually due to abuse.

Wow she sounds beatiful. Don't worry she will warm up
My cat follows me around the yard more than my dog does. All they need is a little love. Thought of a name yet?

We live in an apartment, and so don't get to let our cats out except for the balcony. When we get a house (hopefully soon) I'll think about letting them out in the backyard, if I can it'll be on a leash. My mom's cat goes outside pretty well every day, on his leash. Well, in the summer time, anyway.

Cats live far more healthy and long lives if kept indoors all the time. Keeping them indoors almost entirely removes the risk of infectious disease, as well as keeps them away from fighting with other animals. Not to mention the road.

when she was a kitten we made a this toy [basically a stick with a string at the end with a ball at the end of the string] and tease herwith it ,but, behind her, she would try and catch as i waved it up and down and she would try to catch it, eventulay she would jump backwards and through time she would do backflips, keep in mind that i would call her name and i would clap basicaly tease ,till she did the backflip, then i stoped using the toy and she would do a backflip without the toy.

It's normal for them to be shy for a few days to a few weeks. Just give her room.

If you can find a piece of string or yarn, you can dangle it near her and see if she'll play with it. Then over a few days, she'll come out farther and farther to chase the string. Eventually, she'll be up on the kitchen counter looking for food.

Not always, one of my cats was always outside, sometimes being gone for entire weeks at a time. She is still kicking at the ripe age of 20 and has a couple more years in her!
