on FP the 24x48 flowhood they sell is ran by a 1/3hp blower. They also sell a 1/2hp blower that they recomend for 24x48 flowhoods that they recomend to be used on the second highest setting. I dont think it should be that hard to find to find a decent used blower on ebay that will suit your use for under 100 shipped on ebay.

If the rating doesn't have an @ 1" or better, don't buy it no matter what.

RR,

I spoke with a fellow from Grainger today. The ratings only go up to .5" on a lot of their blowers. So he calculated that the two I posted about would work around 500cfm @ 1". Even though there was no rating for that ammount of SP, should I go on his word?

Graingers works with a lot of hvac people, so I'd give it a try if the price is right. There's no 'exact' amount of air the flowhood should put out, so you have wiggle room. You want the airflow to bend a cigarette lighter flame over between 45 and 90 degrees, but not even come close to blowing it out. If you get in that range, you're set. Be sure to have a plenum for air pressure to equalize(static pressure) behind the filter. Look at the plans on Anno's site for more details.

I'm back,

I have planned on using the ecoplus 12" blower. It pushes 1060 CFM @ 0.0". It will be closer to 600 CFM @ 1". THis will be ok, right?

there should be a spec sheet showing what CFM it puts out at different static pressures ..

I've made cheapies before. They can be made cheap if you're willing to settle for non-laminar flow.

non-laminar flow would be non-useful.
as anything non-laminar will create turbulences and therefor be a contam hazard.

STILL AIR gloveboxes are a very good cheap alterntive.

Lots of flow hoods and transfer stations are made non-laminar. If you have sides and a sliding front with good airflow it works just fine. The airflow has to be somewhat smooth across the outlet and high enough velocity that nothing can be sucked inside and swirled around.

Sometimes they call them transfer stations or clean benches.

Here is an example that is similar to one I made once...

Lot's of discussion there. Not everyone here agrees that non-laminar hoods work well, but they are in use in labs and are made by big scientific supply places. I know from experience that they can be made and will work if you do it right.

The key things in the top design is to make sure that you seal up whatever cheapie HEPA that you buy to eliminate blow-by. Some designs are easier to seal up than others. All the ones I've seen look like they have some blow-by, but the one pictured can be sealed up with a little work. I suggest cutting a hole and gluing your HEPA filter right into the opening. Also make sure that your opening is small enough that you have good airflow that is fast enough so that no part of the opening is sucking air back in.

Some cheap hepa filters that the units use don't look like they are sealed up that well and may have some blow-by themselves. I have found that the Holmes HAPF600CS filters are not sealed well and look like they will have some blow-by. OTOH the Holmes HAPF30 seems well sealed and I have used those with success. The HAPF30 has an interesting clip system, so you can use the clip to joint multiple filters together for larger area. Just put the filters face down and jam the clip down onto the tabs. Then tape the gap at the end of the seam and use hotglue, caulk, or whatever to seal up that gap. So you can make a filter as large as you need.

A flow hood I made a long time ago with 4 HAPF30 filters worked great. I left two PDA dishes out in the hood for about 30 minutes while working and I got one fungal contam colony on one of the plates. That is about as good as you can expect using 99.97% filters and is plenty good for mycological work.
