Couple of cool pics from this year's hunts.
    #7881623 - 01/15/08 04:50 AM (5 years, 4 months ago)

Hericium fighting off the snow, on fallen douglas fir. MMM that was a great white wine, cream sauce.

I never did ID this one, but it was striking enough to introduce to Homer. My direction pointing wood spirit.

that second one is considered the umbrella mushroom, I hear it makes a good edible. How are you finding hericium's so late in the season? Where are you?

I thought the second one was likely Sparassis crispa, the cauliflower mushroom

That Herecium pic is wonderful. I'm glad you got to eat it.

Yeah, as xmush said, number two is sparassis crispa. And that is an awesome hericium. You are so lucky to still be finding mushrooms this time of year, especially next to snow. Much love.

Hericium was found in very late October in "second growth" to" old growth" douglas fir forests at about 2500 feet in the pacific northwest.

They only seem to grow from fallen trees however, so be sure to look for freshly fallen fir. I will be searching this one out quite a bit more next year.

The Chanterelles are wonderful, but this hericium has a very unique texture, and is perfect for stir fry.

Here is another un-id from his year. This was found in a clear cut logging area.

And we all know what these are. Some very potent fruits found earlier this fall.

Very good. I thought Armillaria until i opened the image, and realized it was Pholiota.

Hericium is perhaps my second favourite edible, however, wild ones are FAR superior in flavour to cultivated.

I seem to find hericium's atleast americanum, from upright tree's, infact the one's I always find are growing from half living tree's. I find the more corel like ones that are more fluffy fruiting from fallen timber.
