 Springtime Mushroom Photography?

Just curious, I'm going on a roadtrip allover the west coast to photograph whatever I can, from butterflies to Mushrooms, but specifically mushrooms. Any kind, especially photogenic mushrooms are what I want to photograph.
I'd love to know what species grow from california to washington in the Spring. Also where would I find them (nonspecific location, but rather, should I stick close to the coast, or more inland, or in the forests? Also I'm not talking about psychoactives, well not only talking about them).
When should I go as well? I'm planning on leaving near the end of March, a week or a week and a half from April. What do you think? :o

yeah, Mushrooms Demystified by David Aurora focuses on mushrooms which grow in the pacific northwest, especially California. It's a pretty heavy book.

Well I have a few different books, both the audubon one and another field guide. Unfortunately they don't really help on location and timing.

Mushrooms grow year-round in California, although they are sparse in the summer. Coastal fogs tend to keep the environment wet near the ocean even when there hasn't been much rain. Mushrooms like teh wet.

I'd hit up the coastal mountains of Santa Cruz, and head north up to San Fran, and even further.
Living in Santa Cruz for 7 years I found literally hundreds of species of mushrooms during the wet season, and quite a few during the spring.
You won't be finding nearly as much during March, but, there will still be quite a few. I used to find a lot of chantrelles in the spring, also amanita velosa, (springtime amanita). What also is interesting, if you're lucking you can find Morels during this time of season. I always found mine in garden beds, never in the wild, but, they were proficient during this time. Its been a few years, and I cannot remember what else I would find.... hmmm....
Those coastal mountains, redwood, tan oak, oak, etc forests yield a lot of variation.
Here are some pictures that are dated from Feb that I took,
Habitat
Psathyrella gracilis (these were found in January actually -- i just like the pic!)
Morels
You'll see these everywhere ( Jacks I believe)
Apparently I found some black trumpets in May

This is definitely going to be a fun time. I'm leaving about the start of april to california. I hope it's good! I'm getting a few new lenses for my camera, but I already have a great macro lens. (It's a little big for mushie photos, it was originally for butterflies), a 180mm 1:1 ratio F/3.5 Macro lens.

The start of april is often a bit late for the bay area / santa cruz. You might have to look up in the mountains.

What about the coastal and northern regions? If that's the case my treck through So-Cal may not occur. I'm talking all species though.
I really screwed up on this last trip this fall (I went up to the PNW and didn't do shit, no shroomerites could hang out).

I would say as long as the rain continues here, you will not have a problem finding what your looking for. Good luck on your trip. I'm interested in seeing what you find.

On that note, since my last thread got locked because I asked this simple question and the dude obviously can't read (as i've had the same opinions from about 8 people on #shroomery IRC). I'm gonna ask it in here or personally hold one of the moderators responsible for my loss of money. (Gas is 3.50 a gallon these days)
Should I bother going to southern california in April or just travel north if I'm to photograph mushrooms on the coast?

Don't threaten the moderators. Our jobs here are voluntary, we don't owe anyone answers, we do it because we like to.
It's impossible to know if there will be ample mushrooms in Northern CA in 2 months from now. There probably will be, but I cannot makes any promises since I do not control the rain.
The choice is all yours. If you ask closer to the time (1-2 weeks before your trip) we can give you a better idea. However, I'm sure that does you no good in planning your trip.
Sorry, I tried to look into the future, but I guess I suck at it.

It's not a threat, I'm just going to blame him. like "Man, he's the cause of me spending all that money in gas because no one helped out on telling me that the season ends in february in socal." That Kind of thing.
And the response from you is more of what I was looking for, even if it's an "I don't know" it's better than a "you're not allowed to ask that."
Also I'm not asking about actives.
