oysters growing on washed straw
    #7816948 - 12/31/07 11:40 AM (4 years, 4 months ago)

Here are some oysters I grew last year on chopped washed wheat straw. I have pictures of the whole project but unfortunately I am in nearly all of them as it was for a failed business venture. The process was simple:
1. Chopped up 4 40lb. bales of wheat straw with an electric lawn mower in a little 9'by9' room that would later serve as an incubation room. I used a handkerchief to cover my mouth and coughed up brown goo for nearly a week. Now I do all of the process out doors with a respirator.
2. I submerged 1/3 of the straw into a 300 gallon stock tank filled 2/3 the way full with water and one bottle of Seventh Generation hand dish washing soap (free and clear of scents or dies). The straw was then washed for about fifteen minutes with a strong garden rake.
3. The straw was pitch forked onto three pallets with a roll of hardware cloth on it to drain. When the straw had been drained to the appropriate moister content it was pitched onto a big tarp that was held down with bricks. I spread the straw around so that it was about
3" high on the tarp.
4.I inoculated the four bales of straw with one bag of Amycel 3015 spawn and bagged it into 40 thirteen gallon kitchen bags. The bags were punctured five times or more on each side were hung in the grow room. Incubation took three weeks at 75 decrees F. Brought down the temp to 55 decrees F. with pins appearing on the tenth day. The first flush weighed 73Lbs., the second at around 20lbs. and nearly nothing for the third(3-5lbs.).

Sweet. Thanks for sharing. So, no heat pasteurization at all, just soap? I usually soak in soapy water, but follow up with heat pasteurization. I guess I've been too chicken to try it with soap alone.

Yeah, thanks for posting this. I had heard this could be done, it's nice to hear from someone that did.

How much spawn is in a bag of Amycel 3015?

There are 21 pounds of fresh spawn for any of Amytcels strains. They are kind of a pain to buy from as they only ship UPS. Also I think that they like to sell to business's mostly. When I bought my last case it was 65 bucks including shipping(2 bags per case).

"So, no heat pasteurization at all, just soap?" Yup sometimes I'd even clean my hands before inoculating:) the only time that I've ever ran into trouble(contamination and delayed fruiting)has been in the summer due to hot daytime temps(90-95F).

Wow, 21 pounds of fully colonized spawn for $65 including shipping is a great deal.

I don't even attempt to fruit my oyster strain, which was cloned from the central Cascades, in summer. Mine fruits best at 50F to 60F.

Actually it is 21 pounds to a bag two bags to a case, which was $65 including shipping. The catch is that they don't take credit/debit and usually they want you to fill out a credit application. Otherwise they ship it as a COD(which is what I always did). They supply Monteray Mushroom Inc with most of their spawn.
