Quote:

Starting in the 1950 the CIA began experimenting with drugs trying control subjects behavior and alter brain functioning. Project MK-ULTRA was set up to understand mind control, to aid in interrogation, and perhaps even create “Manchurian Candidates” for dummy governments around the world. The CIA tested a wide variety of psychoactive substances, most notably LSD, on the general public and often without consent of the subject. Whether or not such a program still exists is a matter of debate (e.g. Guantanamo), however the original program was in fact successful for many of the intended goals and I would speculate that this type of research has continued within the government.

There are a plethora of drugs available today with mind controlling effects. The effects of these drugs is quite varied, so I have tried to keep the descriptions fairly brief. Check out how different drugs are used to manipulate, brainwash, and incapacitate unsuspecting victims.

Truth Serums

SyringeImagine a prisoner handcuffed to a chair in a dark interrogation room. Two police officers hound the prisoners with questions. “I ain’t saying nothing!” shouts the con. So in steps a doctor with a syringe filled with a truth serum. He injects the drug and within a few minutes the prisoner appears intoxicated and is finally answering questions.

The typical truth serum is a sedative. Sedatives are drugs that depress the central nervous system. Their effects include relaxation, calmness, sleepiness, and slowed breathing. They give a person slurred speech, a dizzying gait, slowed reflexes, and poor judgment. A good truth serum will also reduce inhibitions and increasing talkativeness, and thus the qualities of poor judgment and relaxation are key.

Why do these drugs work? It is hypothesized that because lies are usually more complex than the truth that people must use the areas of their brain that allow for higher reasoning and cognition when lying. Drugs that reduce the functioning of these areas of the brain reduce the ability for subjects to think up lies and the truth is the only thing that they can imagine. The actual effectiveness of these drugs has been disputed, however, it has been found that these drugs are very often effective at revealing truthful information that would otherwise be withheld. These drugs are not effective on trained liars and those who have already established a story because higher cognition is not needed to recall previous lies.

The most common of these drugs is alcohol. Anyone who has been drunk or around someone inebriated can attest to the side effect of poor judgment. People often say things “that they didn’t mean” or reveal secrets and other private information while under the influence of alcohol. While there is no guarantee that someone will tell the truth, they will be less able to mask their body language and more likely to accidentally let the truth slip out.

Alcohol

Scopolamine or Hyoscine, the drug found in motion sickness patches, can be used as a truth serum. The problem with this drug is that it can induce delusions and delirium, and a delusional prisoner does not make a very good interrogation subject. It is also very easy to cause an overdose and the drug is toxic so it is not very often used.

Truth SerumTemazepam, a sedative-hypnotic, has been used by the Soviets and East Germans during the cold war. It is no longer used very often because it greatly induces sleep. This drug is prescribed for people with insomnia and other sleeping disorders to help induce sleep. So when the truth inducing effects of the drug kick in the subject may not be awake to talk.

The most famous of the truth serum drugs is Sodium Thiopental, also known as Sodium Pentothal. This drug is a barbiturate and has the added advantages of being fast acting and having a short duration. It is the best of the truth serums because of it’s anesthetic (consciousness reducer) properties. It is so effective that as of 2002 it was still publicly in use in criminal investigations in India. This drug also has another useful forgetting effect which leads us to the next item on the list.

Amnesia

You wake up somewhere in a dark alley. Your wallet is missing, you’re covered in filth, and you’ve got a pounding headache. The last thing you remember was drinking a beer at a local restaurant. Someone must have slipped a drug into your drink and the effects of the drug are finally wearing off. They managed to steal all your belongings and you have no idea what’s going on or where you are. Were you violated? Are you going to be okay? The drug they gave you caused you to forget everything that happened.

No Memory

Drugs that cause amnesia can work in a variety of ways. Many work like the “truth serum” drugs by depressing the central nervous system. Some amnesia drugs interfere with structures in the brain responsible for memory and others work by causing dissociation (altered consciousness that causes a loss of self).

AlcoholAlcohol is once again the most common amnesia drug. In sufficient quantities it will induce memory loss. Anyone who has drank sufficient quantities of alcohol will experience “blacking out.” This is when someone appears drunk and awake, but the next day cannot remember the events because memories fail to form.

Flunitrazepam, also known as Rohypnol or “roofies,” is probably the most known of amnesia drugs besides alcohol. It is easily dissolved in alcoholic beverages and only a small amount of the drug is required for the drug to work. Thus a “roofie” is slipped into an unsuspecting person’s drink and the subject becomes greatly intoxicated and experiences memory loss. It is also very difficult to distinguish someone intoxicated with Flunitrazepam from someone that is drunk, so other people drinking alcohol will figure that the person has just had too much to drink. For these reasons Flunitrazepam is often administered to women and used as a date rape drug.

The drug GHB (Gamma-Hydroxybutyric Acid) also works as a CNS depressant to cause memory loss. It too can be dissolved into alcoholic drinks to increase CNS depressant effects, however, it has a noticeably salty taste. Unlike alcohol GHB causes a noticeable state of euphoria, and increased libido, along with the effects of increased sociability and intoxication. Like mixing alcohol and “roofies”, the mixture of alcohol and GHB is difficult to distinguish from alcohol intoxication alone. GHB is also favored to roofies because it is a chemical that is already found in the body. Thus urine and blood test are very difficult to perform in order to detect the drug.

Many other barbiturates also have the ability to induce memory loss and in some cases this memory loss is put to a good use. Sodium Thiopental and Methohexital are both used in medicine during general anesthesia for surgery and other medical procedures. If a patient should accidentally come out of unconsciousness or experience discomfort during a procedure the amnesia effect ensures that they will not likely remember it.

k holeThe drug Ketamine induces amnesia through the effects of dissociation. People intoxicated with Ketamine will experience what is known as a “K-hole” where they lose their sense of the external world. Perceptions that are experienced during this intoxication do not seem real and are often forgotten. It can be administered alone or mixed into drinks, laced into joints and cigarettes, mixed with cocaine and crushed up with ecstasy pills. It is very often used with other psychoactive substances. This drug is very similar in effect to Phencyclidine(PCP) and the drug found in cough suppressants Dextromethorphan(DXM).

There are also new drugs in development that offer the ability to remove specific memories like shown in the movie “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.” This opens up a whole new variety of amnesia not seen before.

The Use Of Addiction for Control

Drugs that are especially addictive can be used to trap people into bad situations and to get them to do things that they would not normally do. Addiction can be a very powerful motivator; people will often risk unsafe, self-harming, and dangerous behavior in order to acquire the drugs that they are seeking. In many cases this addiction can be so extreme that people will resort to violence, and other criminal activity to acquire their drugs.

The drugs of addiction are often easy to acquire, pleasurable, lasting a short duration of time, and involve tolerance and withdrawal. These conditions get new people to try the drug, to enjoy the drug, to continually use and eventually overuse the drug, and then to experience discomfort from not having the drug. Both the legal and illegal markets can face market fluctuations. When the supply becomes limited the prices shoot upward and people, without their fix, become desperate. It is in these conditions that people with an addiction are manipulated.

Meth

Cocaine, heroin, caffeine, methamphetamine, refined sugars (e.g. sucrose, fructose), nicotine, alcohol, marijuana, MDMA (ecstacy), and many other drugs are used for their addictive purposes. And from these addictions we get “crack whores,” “needle freaks,” “caffeine junkies,” “meth heads,” the obese, “chain smokers,” “alcoholics,” “pot heads,” and “e-tards.”

CaffeineThe legal addictive drugs in the US (e.g. sugar, alcohol, caffeine, nicotine) support trillion dollar industries. These industries provide their goods to the public at reasonable prices, employ lots of workers, and provide additional benefits to government and society. These industries also support additional trillion dollar industries to counteract the side effects from these drugs (e.g. weight loss, sleeping aides). Fortunately, the government is able to monitor, tax, and regulate all of these industries to ensure that they exploit consumers’ addictions reasonably. While there are still many addicts, there are also many profiting services to treat these addictions.

Drugs don't payThe illicit addictive drugs in the US (e.g. marijuana, cocaine, heroin, meth) also support trillion dollar industries. Inner city gangs, international cartels, and organized crime are all businesses operating in this black market. The high demand for these illicit goods and total disregard of laws make these businesses especially profitable. The illegal drug market too supports additional trillion dollar industries, however it is in the form of prisons, law enforcement, surveillance. These industries are not paid for by just the addicts either, everyone who pays taxes ends up paying for these services. And the illicit drugs also gives rise to many addicts, however there are very few services besides prison to treat these addictions.

What the Government Really Discovered with MK-ULTRA

LSD is one of the few “mainstream” drugs that is not addictive. In other words people are not compelled to take this drug over and over to maintain their high or prevent symptoms of withdrawal. As a business model a non-addictive, cheap, and useful drug is a recipe for disaster. Anyone would be able to use the drug to experience the psychoactive effects and have no need to ever use it again. On top of that the drug is “mind expanding” causing people to question their beliefs, challenge the status quo, and even discover radical new theories and inventive solutions. There is even evidence that LSD may be an effective treatment for drug addictions like alcohol.

LSD

LSD is the antithesis of mind control; the CIA discovered this fact and has done everything to keep it top-secret. The government is terrified of LSD becoming available to the masses. People just might think independently, and ignore the government’s propaganda. The last thing the government wants is the people unbinding themselves from their shackles and taking control of their own lives.

The government relies on your perceived dependency to stay in business and stay in control. Therefore as an American you MUST support the War on Drugs or else you are a terrorist. That means keeping drugs illegal, and forcing addicts to pay criminals and terrorists for drugs… how else are we going to fund both sides of the War or Terror?

Good article... but the variation in the context should be illustrated more clearly.

The first series of drugs require interpersonal administration to be particularly effective as mind control substances (Truth Serums and Amnesia drugs).

The second series (Addictive drugs) are candidates for mind control in the context of self administration more so than interpersonal administration. (The person force feeding you heroine makes his manipulative intentions clear, and impedes the motivation created by your physiological cravings. If you are allowed to satisfy your cravings 'on your own accord' the controlling influence remains largely unseen and is therefor much more insidious and effective)

Psychedelics, like LSD, are in fact mind control substances in both contexts- self administration and interpersonal administration.

When in the context of self administration the individual gains more self direction of his mind, and is somewhat freed from the grips of other controlling influences (this would be the anti-mind control effect described in the article).

In the context of interpersonal administration the administrator may have the ability of choosing the particular stimulus experienced while under the influence of the drug. If this is the case, the administrator gains the ability to impression the subjects mind in a very forceful, if not precisely directed manner.

Overall a good article though, still.

Interesting article. Bias in the favor of LSD no doubt, but a good read.
