hard drive problems
    #7689832 - 11/28/07 10:40 AM (16 years, 4 months ago)

so, my hard drive had been giving me shit lately. a lot of corrupted files, funny noises, freezing. classic signs of an imminent hard drive failure. i backed up everything, and used gparted to delete all my partitions. then i re-installed xp and installed the western digital diagnostics tool, and ran the extended scan. the scan didn't even finish amd gave an error that said there were too many bad sectors. i know my disc is probably fucked up now, but i was wondering if there's anything that can help me breathe some new life into it. something i can burn to a cd, then boot up from the cd and then try to fix these bad sectors or someting.

right now, the computer is running smoothly but i bet that won't last long with all those bad sectors.

You could use SpinRite to mark off the bad sectors and perhaps extend the usable life of the drive a bit, but hard drives are dirt cheap these days, just replace it.

www.ultimatebootcd.com is what you're looking for.

You should also start reading up on your warranty. This will probably end with you sending the drive back.

it's a toshiba, it came with my laptop. how many hours? i don't know, a fucking lot. i've had the computer for exactly 11 months.

and yeah, i was checking out some hard drives and apparently one exactly like the one i have is like 85$ on newegg. but i was thinking of buying another brand.

ohh, and i'll definitely try that spinrite program.

There isn't much point in marking off the bad sectors, because to have so many means the drive is constantly creating more. You could mark them all bad, but as soon as your done your scan (even while you run it) you'll have more bad sectors.

You may get lucky, but don't trust it. Back everything up that you care about expecting it to be gone the next time you access the disk.

if you have only had the computer for 11 months and it is new, it is still under toshiba's manufacturers warranty

peace
