Roach-Man Has A Go With Blue Oyster LC

So...I got out a mixing bowl, some hydrated alder wood, some organic BRF, verm, and a container of water...
ALL these jars were "eye-balled" (nothing measured)...I know that's a BIG no-no, but I've been mixing jars for a while now. :smile:

A side by side of all jars:

(almost all wood, some verm, covered with BRF)

(almost all wood, some verm, less BRF than #1)

(mostly PF, some wood)

(nearly all PF except whatever wood was left in the bowl)

BTW, these were inocculated on 11/05
(forgot that earlier because I was in a hurry)

Just wondering...do you dunk Oyster cakes the same way you dunk cubes?
I would assume so, but...better safe than sorry.

(I'll do a search later if nobody responds, but I'm back out the door to go to dinner.)

Found my answer:

At first it is, yes.
Oysters don't produce rhizomorphic mycelium, so often look grey at first. After you birth the cakes, then dunk and roll, they'll often get covered with what you'll swear is cobweb, but it isn't.

Good information, but my jars have some rhizomorphic growth.
Not as much as cubensis, but rhizomorphic nonetheless.

Do any contams exhibit rhizomorphic growth?

oysters do exhibit rhizomorphic growth...but its not exactly prevalent or the norm. i think youre doing fine.

I doubt it, Mitch...the guy that sent it made it all look pretty damn proffessional! :wink:

The growth did start out quite cottony;
I attribute some of the rhizomorphic growth on the totally organic grains/wood.

I agree, I've seen some pretty heavily rhizo growth from oysters, especially from pinks. I usually do a lot of isolation work before I start fruiting, but still, IME you can get great fruitings from either rhizomorhpic or tumescent growth patterns.

Thank you; that word was not in my vocabulary.

I've got to do another search regarding what else to do differently with my B.O. cakes...such as:

I know to dunk, and roll...but do they benefit from a cold shock?

Is fluctuating humidity good for oysters OR is this just for shitake?

Etc.

Oysters like large amounts of fresh air and the more humidity the better. I've never had to cold shock oysters, after they colonize the substrate they pin rapidly - I doubt it would hurt them though. Low humidity will hurt your yields and make them tougher, but trust me those guys will grow just about anywhere.

Yes you should use fluctuating humidity. I actually like to run close to 100% for a little while, and then drop down using ventilation and cutting off the misters. I do this about 7 times a day. For some reason letting them dry out a little for short periods seems to increase the shelf life and also tends to give meatier mushrooms...

Make sure you give them lots of FAE. BTW, I always love to see substrate trials! Thanks.
