Okay, so I found a prime location for P.cyanescens today. I drove about thirty miles from my house towards some relatively new housing developments. I looked around a playground with woodchips and found no luck, but then just as I was about to abandon my search, I had to stop to go take a piss. I parked my car, got out, and walked looking for a private spot to pee. I stumbled upon a fairly wide trail, it could've passed as a road, but it was covered in loose birchwood debris on top of more birchwood debris on top of more, etc etc. You know where I'm going with this. Anyway, it looked to be a prime spot for Cyans. I noted the ground was very soft, almost like walking on a huge pile of grass clippings...it was that soft. So, I knew that this ground was recently messed with. Anyway, there was also a pretty big clearing that also was covered in birchwood and birchwood mulch...that ground was soft, too. However, after not finding any mushrooms growing there, I decided to examine the ground more closely. I did some topical digging with my fingers, and found that underneath the top layer of birchwood, was some whitish stuff. It wasn't widespread, but there were tiny bits of it here and there. It looked like, and felt much like mycelium. So, if I were to come back and check this spot, how long should I wait to go? I don't want to check back daily, it's much too far out of my way to take daily trips, but how long until mycelial growth becomes a healthy patch of cyans? Should I even bother going back in a couple weeks? The overnight lows in my area have been doing a good job of staying above 40 degrees, and there's been good amounts of rain every couple days or so, but is Washington going to see frosts and freezing before these suspected cyans can grow? I don't know when the season ends....
And if and when it does end, do cyans fruit again in the spring? And about what time of year should I expect them to be fruiting in the PNW?? Can someone answer these questions for me? Thanks..

well they could be cyans but theres no way to tell until some mushrooms fruit. Only way to know is to go back.

Most mycelium does not produce P. cyanescens.

what scout said.
plus, someone here said they brought back mycelium from a patch of fruiting cyans, which they considered indeed cyanescens mycelium, and it turned out to fruit stropharia auruntiaca instead.
again, seconding what scout said to be true.
there just too much mycelium out there to say that its even "probably" cyanescens.

you wouldn't know what it was until it fruited mushrooms
so if you didn't see cyans, there's no way of knowing that's what it was

mushrooms do not like growing in mulch that is over a few inches thick. They will grow there but not in great numbers. The mycelium needs to be able to release co2 and when the chips are think they suffocate.
Like the rest of the guys said, cyan's do not grow everywhere that is hospitable fo them,. They have to be introduced to the area either naturally or artificially

well, my other question was, what month or months during the spring do cyans refruit, if at all? I think it's over for cyans in my part of WA state right now, it's getting too cold too fast, so I would like to know what time during the spring should I check this spot again?
