Ookla's Ghetto Grafting guide.....
    #7540606 - 10/20/07 07:57 PM (1 year, 1 month ago)

Been a while since i posted.....
I used to get jealous of all on una's (don't know if he/she is still around) grafting pics. I didn't have agar or a humidity chamber or all the cool stuff in the pics. So I began to play with my ghetto grafting. I have tried a bunch of ways and techniques and have come up with a pretty sure fire way of grafting and quick growth. I take some rooted perkopsis (sp) and cut it about four inches from the ground. The perkopsis needs to be twice as thick as a pencil. leave the botten two or three leaves on the base. Take the top and sharpen it using a razor blade to a pencil like tip. take a inch or two of the cactus of your choice and make a small cut out in the center of it, i suggested a piece with two cut ends so you get pups and not tip/upward growth. Don't dig too much out, just enough to get your pencil tipped perkopsis started inward. Then shove the cut cactus onto the perkopsis stalk. No need for dusting sulphur, or tape or band aids. Just shove it in and forget it. I have used this technique 15 times and all but two were successful grafts. I will be getting rid of some perkopsis soon also, this stuff grows like weeds..... the growth on the grafted cactus' is way faster than non grafted or grafted on mirtillo cactus. I will try to get some pics posted. Hopefully this in not to garbled. I magine this could work on lophora but I have only used it on pedro/torch cactus. So use on lophora at your own risk. I would try it on lophora but I am in the US and my balls are not that big.....

how old do the grafted cacti need to be???

I wonder if I could just slice a hole into the side of a cactus and impale it on a sharpened Pereskiopsis?????
gonna go give it a try :thumbup:

I remember on the nook there was an idea that you could take several pereskiopsis stocks and plug them (kinda like this) into the sides of a cactus. So it would be like the cactus was growing on it's own roots or a rootstock, and then also had several pereskiopsis feeding into it from it's sides. I don't remember seeing it in action but it was a cool idea. Reminds me a of cactus powerplant.

cpw I don't see why it wouldn't work although it might be a good idea to angle the pereskiopsis so they go slightly upward as they plug in. Not sure, just my 2 cents.

If you get it to work, I would be most interested in seeing the results! Good luck bro!:thumbup:

just let me see if this takes and then well talk

yeah I was thinking it would have to be a multi tiered pot so the Pereskiopsis sit lower and angle up

ok heres what I came up with.....

I figure when I plant the Pereskiopsis around it the soil line for that will be an inch below the Terscheckii soil line.

I will perform the surgery tonight

I did a few more operations and took a pic of them under the flouros for a better image.....

so what do you think ookla????? are they all doomed????

Those look great. you should be good to go. Please keep us updated on the Frankenstien that you have created. Some of the best ideas come from just trying something different. Your set up looked just like mine, took a bunch and went for it. Plus I have the luxury of the texas sun to help. I tried grafting onto the flat surface of the perkopsis, all that kept happening was i kept losing pups. this way has been a savior to me. Hey the guy that asked about the cuttings shoot me a pm and i will send you some. Send me a safe addy.....

cool man thanks so much for posting this and getting my ass inspired.
this is the type of shit that makes me want to jump up and down and then :bongload: lol
I know what you mean about the flat grafting too.
I only had so many survivors with that method.
thats why I had Torch seedlings so old with plenty of Pereskiopsis kicking around lol.
If the grafting was that easy I would have grafted them at 2 weeks old every time.
also when I was doing the first grafts with this method I went in so far when pushing them on and then I took it out so the juices and air bubbles could come out so the graft was tighter when it went back in

Oookla awesome tek! Out of curiousity how old are those baby torch's?

Cpw if octavius works out I will worship you that will be fucking awesome! I'm thinking that maybe the torch would outgrow all the pereskiopsis and rip out the grafts tho...
