psiloman: why would u need more than one pereskiopsis for a loph seedling... they grow like fuck with a single root stock anyway...

Mostly for experimentation purposes and to see if one could achive significantly more growth this way before the graft slows down. A signle graft works WONDERS but i was mentioning an idea for maximizing it. By the way, what has Kadakuda tried? I must have missed something. Anyone willing to point me to the thread he/she mentions it?

Ah still what is proposed later on ,of implimenting a grown lophophora with more pereskiopsis if the "frankencactus" shows viable results , certainly surpases this idea

lol i think lophs would be even more prone to splitting if u give them too much growth potential... but its worth a try for the sake of trying :yesnod:

I for one am interested in psiloman's idea. I saw that idea posted on another forum a while back, I think someone tried it but never posted results. As long as you bound the peres together tightly and the cut was flat I think it would work. Hell, you could even bind together a few more pereskiopsis and graft on a somewhat larger scion, within reason of course. Probably not lophs because of imminent splitting, but you could do it with trichs. Maybe it wouldn't work, maybe only one or two peres would take and there'd be normal or a little faster growth, or maybe the scion would erupt like a volcano. I'd like to see it done but my grafting skills at the moment are somewhat sub-par.

Yes i posted the idea with a schematic ,under a different username in another forum. The person that undertook the project ,showed us i think an initial photo of it but soon after the person dissapeared never to be seen again.I tried contacting him with no success..Hope the person is alright.

Hmm there are many things one coyld try in respect to grafting. For example one could even graft a Tricho or a Lophophora on a pereskiopsis and when it binds, one could put it into a hydroponics setup.Hmmm maximum water/nutrient uptake supplied to a plant that can handle it ,that gives it to plant that normally couldnt handle it in its own roots. If nothing else, its interesting.

that sucker better grow fast in a hydro setup because with such slow growing plants I like to set them in soil and not mess with it.
your other idea is a good one though and its too bad the person never updated it.
I will update mine
speaking of updates ....
the Torches I grafted I took out of the humidity yesterday and the cut edges at the bottom are healing up nicely with no mold ect. the cacti still look healthy so far. a few of them when I was putting them on gave a little pop which I think was the top breaking from the pressure but they are ok so far. maybe they will develop a few heads now from the damage????

and Octavius is doing good so far also
the real test is when the Pereskiopsis are hard to pull on and I am not gonna try that anytime soon

if it splits, that just means you have another pereskiopsis outlet....
plug er in!

Just thought I'd throw in a comment on the problem mentioned earlier about the "powerplant" cactus possibly pulling the pereskiopsis out as it explodes with growth. - Just simply plant the pereskiopsis in separate pots that you can adjust according to the height of the cactus.

Great ideas guys!

because of the way that cacti grow the only thing I see happening is the width getting bigger.
where the Pereskiopsis join into the cactus isn't gonna get any higher because only new growth will be any higher.

update
they are all doing great
it seems like the Torches are bonded to the Pereskiopsis already.
growth should resume anytime now I am hoping

ok a lot of my smaller grafts arent looking too great but the bigger ones are doing well....
heres the bigger ones

and Octavius is doing good and I will graft in more Pereskiopsis once I get 4 more big enough.

and heres a couple flat grafts that are over a year old. Octavius's brothers and sisters. Are cacti male or female???
also my 3 headed Torch on the right but that ones only a few months old.

ok heres more results for ya......
well a few of them have developed rootbuds and I wonder if grafts actually send roots into the cacti they are grafted to and feed off them?????

and heres a two header that was grafted with the roots left on. kinda octavius style but we will get to see the results quicker...

and this next one is a comparison between flat grafting and impale style. the one on the left was flat grafted and the other two are impaled.... and when you see it in the picture it isn't as dramatic as seeing it in person. the flat graft may die but the others are gonna live

but yep all hail Ookla
I wanna thank you for sharing this awesome method

no... that means u have little to no vascular contact and they are throwing roots in search of water...

I wondered that as well.
I wish my big Pedros would throw out some damn roots. they have some big pups already and no roots yet.
of course I planted them upside down at the start and I pulled them up to look for roots and found white pups.
I am just learning lol
I have had them the right way for almost a few months now and only one threw out some roots so far.

yeah i know wot u mean man, sometimes it feels like forever waiting for big chunks of cacti to root... then the small pieces root fast as hell...

probably due to the fact that the bigger pieces have more stored water to keep them alive and dont feel like rooting until they have dehydrated some... that graft that is throwing roots knows its gonna be dead soon if it doesnt do something fast to save itself :yesnod:

well it better throw them roots to the ground then cause if it doesn't wanna live as a graft I will be posting the pics of its demise.

and dont forget that cacti can take moisture from the air too :-)
