Lower Alabama ID request
    #7508385 - 10/11/07 09:39 AM (4 years, 7 months ago)

Sorry I don't have any field pics or a spoor print, but I picked these yesterday during the day at a field near my house while on a walk.

That's mildly shitty. I jumped a fence cause I could see them growing in cow dung even though they didn't look like the ones I usually get out of a different field.

Does anyone know the varities of mushrooms I should NOT eat that would be in the Gulf Coast region of Alabama?

I don't know if you have got this right: There is no picture and therefor absolutely NOTHING to ID.

Maybe you should do some reading... Due to the fact that I'm not from the US south states, I can't answer your question but I guess there are plenty sites on the net, that give a little intro on the different mushrooms that are located in your area.

Read the forum rules (it really is important!), do some reading on the net, post pics of the mushrooms you've found and THEN ask for an ID

Not the whole list. Any that I woud find in my area in a cow field. Don't worry about pictures unless you feel you have the time.

Are the pictures not showing up at all?

The list of msuhrooms you actually COULD eat without having trouble is MUCH shorter and still -and that's what I guess- nobody hear take the "work" from the shoulders in the way of searching through the internet and books to tell you all of them... Seriously, don't feel offended, but this would be an ass load of work to do abd is something you should better do by your own! Just look for sites on the net that deal with the florida mushroom fauna, read, and learn.

Anyway... what you've found there looks like Pan. Cyanescens, though I won't give an ID on these blurry pics...

Sorry for the blurry pics, but I snapped these before going to sleep last night and it looked alot more clear then.

The mushrooms are drying now so taking more pictures wouldn't help. But, they bruised blueish. The caps are small and when they were fresh they had like a golden color in the center of the cap fading to white. No ring around the stem at all and the gills were greyish.

I do have a field guide, but it didn't list any lookalikes for the varities of mushrooms that I would pick in my area, so I'm kinda confused as to what posionous mushrooms I could run into out here.

They all appear to be Panaeolus cyanescens. Nice find.

Don't expect the books to tell you all the foes
Just look for mushrooms that look a little like the ones you look for and try to learn to identify them properly.
Additional you should search the forums here at the shroomery. It really helps

Do Panaeolus cyanescens only grow in wood chips or would this grow in cow dung? Because that's were they came from.

Were the "woodchips" in a cow pasture? Stable shavings perhaps?

No, they don't! At least I've never heard of them on wood chips.
Panaeolus is a dung loving species.

They worked just fine. A friend and I took about 5 caps each in a shot of lemon juice.
