WBS/GRAIN JAR & LC HINTS
    #6297615 - 11/18/06 04:57 PM (5 years, 6 months ago)

Most wbs/grain jar colonization failures (excluding contamination).

Is from the wbs/grain being EITHER to WET, or to DRY.

Learning how to properly hydrate wbs/grains.

Is the initiation into bulk cultivation.
It takes a few trials, and often errors.
To find a method that works for you.

I prefer a simple soak.
Without any simmer.

IMHO, simmering can over-hydrate wbs/grains, very easily.

Since LC's are the rage lately.

Getting the wbs/grain moisture content, RIGHT.
Is even MORE IMPORTANT.

Since, you will be adding 1 to several ml more moisture to jars, when you inoculate them.

If wbs/grain jars are already on the WET SIDE.
Adding more moisture, can F/U the works.
Leading to slow colonization :mad2:, bacterial bloom  :mad2:& wet spot contamination. :mad2:

A good rule of thumb, is this.
Once your wbs/grain jars are PC'ed & cooled to room temps.
If, you tilt the jar & can see moisture movement & pooling.

THE JAR IS TO WET, from the beginning. :mad2:

Adding MORE moisture, will incease odds of FAILURE.

You can sometimes salvage those wet jars, by dumping them OUT.
And, allowing the wbs/grain to dry out more.
Then, reload & re-PC the jars.

If using LC, it is WISE to prepare wbs/grain jars.
A tad on the dry side.

LC inoculated jars
Shaken at 15% colonization.
NOT shaken again.

I have noticed that rye doesn't reach it's max under normal soaking conditions (winter rye / rye berries in particular)

I have trusted you since day one agar and sadly look forward every day to see what you have posted for us

I mean if i was to tell my co-workers that when I go home I look forward to a guy from a mushroom site posts and not my old lady it would leave some people scratching their heads.

Love my girlfriend to death but mushrooms are my escape from work, both cultivating and consuming them. It is nice to read some good info when I get off from work

I had found a fix for having too wet grains along time ago after following a TEK given by Scatmanrav (sp?) on his WBS preparation.

So now when I prepare WBS after a 24 hour soak, I do the usual and then dumb the rinsed off WBS into a dish tub (The same white ones that many of us use for deep sub. depth) and simply eye an amount of DRY vermaculite into the pile of WBS. Maybe a few cups will do it per couple pounds of WBS. Simply depends on how much you use. It roughly looks like 10% verm to 90% WBS.

Once I can dig up my pictures from the past again (Im an older member under a new username along with a re-format and having my pics backed up on CDR's) I can show some jars that are prepared this way.

Basically the dry verm absorbs any excess moisture on the seed, and adds a little bit of moisture holding power to the seed.

Ive had nothing but 100% success rate this way.

My wbs turns out to wet about half the time,I seldom have this problem with rye,I do agree that the verm idea cold be a good solution as I have done it a while back when I used cracked corn,As much as I hate verm and you can never get the gold flakes off the jars it is useful in a case like this
