Is anyone else excited to see this movie? I hadn't ever heard of this story until I saw sean penn and emile hersch on oprah the other day. The book seems like itd be great also. Im going to read it and then see the movie.

see the movie, then read the book. this way you won't be disappointed!
*EDIT, well, this way you'll form your impression of the characters around the actors who play them which can sometimes be a bad thing.

NPR had a special about this story the other day.... and they can make anything sound interesting, IMO.... but after thinking about it... I dont really get what the great thing is here?
sure, the guy stuck to his convictions... but in the end he screwed up and died like your average african child.

strangely enough i was also watching oprah that very same day.
(i was with my mom)
and yeah...it does sound pretty cool. although the author of the book kind of came across as a douche imo.

read the book
the guy was mentally ill , he burned around 2 G,s then was working at mcdonalds a couple of months later, tried canoeing down into mexico,got caught with a handgun and had it confiscated,of course they wont put any of that in the movie,yah the author is full of himself always tries to come off as so self important,sean penn is the same way, i,ll watch it online for free sometime

I just read the book. I found it fascinating.
Jon Krakauer is a great storyteller too. I also recommend Into Thin Air; it's the story of the disastrous Everest expedition in 1996, of which Krakauer was a part.

I'd bet money you would like it.
In any case, if you are into mountaineering, read "Eiger Dreams". It's a collection of Krakauer essays and accounts of mountain expeditions.

One of my favorite books is The Crystal Horizon by Reinhold Messner. Its an account of the first solo expedition on Everest. Amazing story, and gives you a great appreciation of what an amazing person Messner was. By far the most accomplished mountaineer ever.

I've read both books several times and honestly think that Into The Wild is much better(and there is a mountain climbing story in it too). Into Thin Air was really good, but I've read better mountain disaster books(such as Touching the Void), Into the Wild is very unpredictable and I think just about everyone of us can relate to it's main character, Christopher McCandless.
Krakauer is one hell of a writer.

Just saw it.
I enjoyed it but as usual the book was superior. Penn seems to have missed some of the messages in the book. He made McCandless a bit too black and white, as if there was no hypocrisy or naivete in him at all. He also made his parents out to be abusive and mean.
It's quite an intense film, and by far the most interesting parts of it were the people McCandless ran into before he went to Alaska. Some of the performances were really top notch. I recommend it, but if you liked the book a lot you'll probably have to like the movie in a different kind of way.

thats cool to hear. sorry i didnt get to reply in my own thread earlier, haha. yes i did see it on oprah initially-to the person that asked 
still havent seen the movie. dunno if ill be able to see it in theatres. still havent read the book but i deff will do both!!! and the book i am probably capable of doing now so maybe ill do that now.

I have not read the book, but saw the movie earlier today. I thought it was good, interesting story... that dude was pretty crazy. The movie is inspiring and sad. Probably worth the watch sometime if you think at all like he did. Reinforces that I need to get out to the mountains/travel this coming summer.

Yeah, i liked the movie, and have heard good things about the book. Dont know what 5150 is talkin' about..
Plus, a fully original soundtrack by eddie vedder!!
