Is anyone else excited to see this movie? I hadn't ever heard of this story until I saw sean penn and emile hersch on oprah the other day. The book seems like itd be great also. Im going to read it and then see the movie.

see the movie, then read the book. this way you won't be disappointed!

NPR had a special about this story the other day.... and they can make anything sound interesting, IMO.... but after thinking about it... I dont really get what the great thing is here?
sure, the guy stuck to his convictions... but in the end he screwed up and died like your average african child.

strangely enough i was also watching oprah that very same day.

and yeah...it does sound pretty cool. although the author of the book kind of came across as a douche imo.

read the book
the guy was mentally ill , he burned around 2 G,s then was working at mcdonalds a couple of months later, tried canoeing down into mexico,got caught with a handgun and had it confiscated,of course they wont put any of that in the movie,yah the author is full of himself always tries to come off as so self important,sean penn is the same way, i,ll watch it online for free sometime

I just read the book. I found it fascinating.
Jon Krakauer is a great storyteller too. I also recommend Into Thin Air; it's the story of the disastrous Everest expedition in 1996, of which Krakauer was a part.

I almost read "Into The Wild" just because it was a Krakauer book. Then I realized the only reason I liked Krakauer was because "Into Thin Air" was such a great read. And that was just because I was so interested in mountaineering at the time it came out. I'd bet money you would like it.
In any case, if you are into mountaineering, read "Eiger Dreams". It's a collection of Krakauer essays and accounts of mountain expeditions.

Will do.
One of my favorite books is The Crystal Horizon by Reinhold Messner. Its an account of the first solo expedition on Everest. Amazing story, and gives you a great appreciation of what an amazing person Messner was. By far the most accomplished mountaineer ever.

I've read both books several times and honestly think that Into The Wild is much better(and there is a mountain climbing story in it too). Into Thin Air was really good, but I've read better mountain disaster books(such as Touching the Void), Into the Wild is very unpredictable and I think just about everyone of us can relate to it's main character, Christopher McCandless.
Krakauer is one hell of a writer.
