Market potential and business idea for Ganodrema lucidum
    #7418599 - 09/16/07 11:32 PM (4 years, 8 months ago)

Hey all.

I recently was at a University in India talking to a mycology professor, where they are developing and studying different strains of Ganoderma lucidum for markets. There is an attached scientific instituition, a sort of public/business/academia interface kind of place, and I met one of the professor's students here who has developed a business plan to produce these for markets.

Here are the main points and questions:

1: They have a business proposal to produce these medicinal mushrooms along with a public or private partner/investor (and this is where I come in) for markets.

2: Plan is to acquire/buy out sick mushroom industries (failing business with land and other fixed assets).

3: Convert these sick industries into producing these strains.

4: Market the mushrooms, quality slightly around that of Japanese Ganoderma, but close to Chinese prices.

5: A powdering/pill/bottling partner will also be needed as final stage of production.

5: Minimum investment is $ 124,000 to be profitable within first year.

6: What do you think of this?

7: What is the market potential? Do you think this kind of investment will work well, given the ideas and quality/price ratio?

8: How would a product from India sound to you, if these were the conditions.

Ideas, comments, everything welcome. Pls let me know, coz I feel this is a good idea but I would have to do a fuck load of work to raise this amount of money and its not going to be easy.

Man, that´s a lot of money. You can get something nice going without that much investment. Besides, if it´s a public/institutional institute or whatever they should help with the money, don´t you think?.
But if you want to consider it, I would study it very well and ask the education department of your country about the project at that university. Read very well everything you sign with them and always do the money transfers through a serious bank. In general, don´t trust anyone, not even your own shadow.

Good luck

Ok to add to what was said, and to answer your question Semilanceata,

They have the expertise and business proposal, plus strains and new strain development capability. They have already spent and continue to spend good amounts of money on their r&d.

They are looking for the investment (and shares in profits will mean money for them) and someone to start the business where they provide expertise and support, and the private investor (me) will run the business and handle the market side.

As for the paperwork, they are a very well respected institution, one of the best in terms of agroecology/mycology/mycoremediation etc. The banking etc will be carried out with a top notch bank.

My main questions are about how this sounds and whether I should go for it, coz I dont want to waste my time and money (which I will have to make and gather from different sources, coz I have only 10 - 12,000 of my own for this)

Good then!

If you have a viable commercial strain, the support and the knowledge to produce and sell the mushrooms, then go for it. The only thing that I don´t see clear is the money issue. If you have 12000 $, how are you gonna get the remaining 112.000$?

Steal. Kill. I guess.

I dunno, I have a few rich friends looking to invest in something, plus I know a few top cats in some banks and stuff. Ill have to work that out later, thing is I wanted to know if there was some sense in pursuing this and if its worth the trouble calling in all favours.

I hope you don´t need to kill anyone!

Reishi is a mushroom with a high demand because of its medicinal properties when consumed, so it should be a good business.
Have you any experience growing mushrooms? You should be able to keep a constant production year round. This needs to be studied very well cause there are many factors to be considered.
I would try to find info about the legal requirements needed to sell it as a medicine in capsules, extracts or whatever.

What is the pollution like there? Ganodermas are cheap from China but avoided by some because mushrooms are known to hyperacummulate certain dangerous substances from their environments. With the air and other pollution in China mushrooms are very iffy. Not sure what things are like in your area in India
