Top Chef Season 3
    #7336381 - 08/26/07 03:37 PM (5 years, 8 months ago)

It's been pretty entertaining so far.

Some of the snobbiness can still be annoying.

I'm rooting for Hung, because he's so neurotic and mentally unstable.

I'm glad they allowed them to re-do the restaurant wars challenge, since it was also the one people fucked up on the past 2 seasons.

Casey's fucking hot.

I've been working alot of fucked up hours and haven't been able to catch all the episodes from this season, so I'm kind of in the dark.

Things I Know:

1) Both of those fat guys, the italian looking one and the fat one with no hair, are annoying as fuck. And I'm not sure either one of them can cook.

2) That whiny little Arab/Indian girl doesnt seem to be able to cook either.

3) I'm not sure anyone is as good as from the last two seasons...

Hung is definitely one helluvan arrogant sonuvabitch, always trying to play off his bad dishes as the judge "just didn't understand."  Obviously, cooking is about personal taste, but come on, you can't expect to hit home runs everytime you're up to bat so quit playin' it off like you can.

Tre was definitely my favorite chef in terms of the food made.  He was light on personality, no drama, but when it came down to the core focus of the show - food - I think he did great.  Apparently on the episode of his elimination he just dropped the ball.. maybe he had too much to drink the night before, maybe the pressure was too much?  Either way, Top Chef is a pretty cool drama.. not sure who will win.

What I really like about this show, is that it has a tendancy to humble the chefs who participate, particularly those who last at least halfway through the season.  Interesting that Howie openly promoted Hung and Tre as "more talented than [him]" after he was dismissed this week.  This guy Howie really softened up during the last episode.  I think he finally realized what a complete and utter jackass he had been to his fellow competitors (perhaps through actually seeing himself on the final cut episodes, or perhaps through phone calls from friends and family, or just the feedback from the other competitors).

Nevertheless, I just really enjoy how everyone tends to mellow out and get a little more supportive of each other towards the later half of the seasons.  It must be quite an ego-crusher to have these judges dissing your creations on national television!

Although Hung does seem to come off being arrogant, what chef isn't? You gotta have thick skin to be in the foodservice business and being an asshole is most of times necessary because your constantly surrounded by either lazy, stupid or drug addled co workers (and the fancier and more expensive the food, the bigger the assholes).Being in the business, I kind of see where he comes from, as most people in this country have such bad tastes when it comes to just about anything, especially food and if you want proof go to a Cheesecake Factory. A smart way to play the game would be to tailor your cooking to the judges palates, and Hung has done this on more than one occasion, dumbing down ideas and flavors to appeal to a broader audience, in fact in the last episode Hung predicts the guest judges' "closed mindedness". However, out of all the judges save for special guest judges, Tom would be the only person there to actually understand and appreciate what someone like Hung would make to really show his skills and impress the judges. Unfortunately I have yet to really see anything made by Hung that has actually made me say "wow". Technically and in execution he is impressive, but in the the world of TV most people tend to pay attention to personality and drama than actual skill and food knowledge. I think it be in Hungs best interest to just bust out some ridiculous dishes sort of what Marcel did throughout the last season, although people and judges hated him they were taken back by his use of cutting edge techniques and ingredients and made for good TV when he ultimately went to the final showdown. Padma is useless eye candy as are all of the female contestants (useless not eyecandy) Most of the special judges obviously just wanted the PR buzz of being on the show, and they certainly should have people like Daniel Boulud or Hubert Keller be on the permanent judging panel instead of some dumb editor bitch from a food magazine who can't cook and the dude from Queer Eye who thinks he can. I was very pleased to see Howie and that other fat asshole go home
(HOT DWOOAHG!). From the beginning I knew neither of them could cook, and they were both high volume kitchen hacks doing outdated poorly executed food. And let's not forget the first guy voted off who made an amuse bouche by stuffing a whole granny smith apple! I don't think I could ever show my face in any kitchen for the rest of my life if I was that guy. In the reunion special he just kind of fell into the background, I think he was maybe asked one question. Ultimately my vote is on Hung not just because he's Asian but because someone who has the skill and who has climbed the ranks to work and become an exec sous at Guy Savoy deserves to win. And anyone who knows the kind of food and reputation Monsieur Savoy has garnered in France and abroad would agree.

  classic.

You're also right about Padma being a horrible judge.  It was funny because in this last episode hung just put booze into his smoothy because he knew padma was just some bimbo who liked booze.

When he won the challenge, Padma awards him with her cookbook.  HAHAHAHAHAH

That's like me handing Rembrandt a color book i made with stencils.

I was also bummed to see Tre go.  He seemed to be one of the most skilled.
