Tips for Southern Louisiana noobie
    #7179414 - 07/15/07 01:18 PM (4 years, 10 months ago)

Hi all. First off, let me say thanks to all of you who post on this site. I have been reading and reading, and you have all motivated me to get out there and do some hunting.

I have spent a fair amount of time scoping out fields in the New Orleans area... but I've had no luck so far- and this is mainly because I'm having trouble getting the balls to enter the cow fields I've seen.

I am hoping you experts can offer me a few tips for locating ideal fields. I know the rules and I'm not asking for specific locations (however wonderfully easy that would make this!), I'm just looking for general pointers. Living in New Orleans, I am required to drive to reach fields, and I don't have any friends here who would be remotely interested in joining me on these adventures. So I am faced with the problem of finding a place where I can park my car and not bring attention to myself. Going at night would be better for this, but I'm that guy that will walk right into a bull and get my ass kicked.

I guess I'm just looking for some encouraging suggestions if anyone has any to offer. Like, if you drove by a field and thought to yourself, "that looks like the perfect field to hunt in"... what would that look like?

Thanks for the help!

Well a lot of mushrooms can be seen from the outside of the field. Drive around and go spotting one day, look for mushrooms already growing in fields, a lot of mushrooms like to grow along fence lines and stuff like that so it shouldn't be too hard. Bring binoculars to see in far distances. Also while spotting if you do find a nice field, look for a spot somewhat far away to park your car.

If a spot is found there are a couple of things you can do:
1) You can go up to the owner's door and tell him you are studying Mycology and you saw he/she has an abundance of mushrooms growing in his fields and you were wondering if he/she would mind if you took some samples. Depending on the owner this might work.

2) Wait till night, dress in black, don't draw attention to yourself, sneak in, grab some mushrooms, run.

I would always recommend a friend, so try to convince a friend that it is fun and worthwile. Also if you are scared of cows or bulls, a lot of field owners will have multiple fields that they keep cows in, try to hit a field that has been recently emptied of cattle.

Good luck.

I live in New Orleans too and I've finally given up trying to find someone with them. Why should I pay $30/eighth anyway when they grow everywhere around here. Most people around here sell them in chocolates so you don't really know what you're getting.

I haven't the slightest clue on where to go hunting so if anyone willing to help me out here I would really appreciate it. I'm thinking about just driving around on the I-10 North and stopping at every cow field I pass by. Does anyone know some good spots and willing to share, or just a general area? I've heard that theres some good spots on the Westbank?

My email is numblock[AT]hush.com so all you hunters reppin the 504 get at me!
