Police use popular site to bust cyber drug dealers September 5, 2007 - NBC2
CHARLOTTE COUNTY: Detectives in Punta Gorda have been using the popular website MySpace to bust drug dealers for the past couple of months.
But Wednesday, they gave NBC2 an exclusive behind the scenes look at how they set up the transactions and our cameras were rolling as their online drug deal turned into a real life bust.
Detectives say it's a fairly simple process. They just set up an undercover profile and then chat back and forth with suspected drug dealers.
Eventually both sides agree to meet.
Authorities say that's what led to the arrest of Wednesday's target - Darrel Haynes.
"It's very effective," said Detective Tom Lewis, who works for the Punta Gorda Police Department.
Police say when they searched Haynes they found exactly what they were looking for - marijuana.
"1... 2... 3... 4... 5... Bags of weed. That's what you agreed to sell on MySpace," said Detective Lewis while talking to the suspect.
Haynes' profile on the website displays a picture with the caption, "June Getting High."
When we asked him, he didn't deny doing drugs, but says he is not a dealer.
"I smoke weed. I had drugs on me, but I wasn't selling it on MySpace," Haynes said after being handcuffed by police.
Haynes now faces a long list of charges, including possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Detective Lewis says the new method of catching suspected drug dealers is so effective he plans to keep it up.

So basically this is what they do...
See that someone smokes weed.
Contact them in a friendly way and say they also smoke weed.
Be friends with the guy that smokes weed and gain his trust.
Go meet the guy that smokes weed, in real life, so they can socialize.
Bust the guy that smokes weed, for having weed, as requested.

Well Myspace is bullshit all together. I mean cops have been doing this stuff on myspace for a couple years now. I think this "drug dealer" was the idiot for meeting someone online and trying to sell weed to them....lol hasn't he ever seen "To Catch a Drug_Dealer"

isn't that like entrapment? in a way they kind of made that guy get the weed for them. lets say that guy had no friends and he only got the weed to make friends cause thats what "the friend" (pig) wanted. so he risk his life to get the weed for this "friend" just only to find out its a setup and gets fucked

Nope. The courts, over the years, have whittled down entrapment to the point that it is pretty useless. It is not considered entrapment if the police encourage you to perform a crime that you would likely commit anyway. For example, if you are a drug dealer, there is nothing the police can do to entrap you for selling drugs. However, if you have never sold drugs in your life, and a cop talks you into selling drugs for him, that would be entrapment.

Police would never get away with that here in Canada, plus we have very little amount of cops, so they have more important stuff to worry about.

Yet another reason for me to continue avoiding that bullshit. I'd rather stick with proven and more private methods of communication. Email and the telephone.
