shiitake log

Well I got my shiitake log in the mail today ..its soaking in ice water now I expect it to take along time to fruit . they said it might not do anything for a month.maybe not even much when it does finally fruit for the first time .. but is the mycelium from the log good to take a culture from and see how well it does on agar or should I purchase a culture and not even bother with the log mycelium? any tips too would be welcome. thanks in advance

In my experience with shiitake, ice water will delay fruiting. I tried dunking in it and had trouble every time. Use cold water, but it needs to be several degrees warmer than ice water, which is just above 32F/0C. Shiitake pins in the fall when the nights are cold, but above freezing and the daytime temps are around 50F/15C. Keep it in the shade. RR

Thanks RR, I did enjoy your video BTW .. I guess its better to say iced water rather than ice water.. since I doubt I got it down to 32 more like 40 degrees .. I will check it though .. my homes RH is around 44 percent and thats in the FL summer. do you think I need to tent it or put it on the porch to enjoy the humidity. But its in the low 90's here now and wont get much colder till October.. they say you cant kill the log . so its an experiment but I always enjoy someone's experience with them . thanks

Hopefully, one of the Florida growers here can give you some tips. It seems like you could put it in a shady spot outdoors, and then this fall when the cool rains start, give it another cold water soak to stimulate pinning. RR

hey what a surprise this morning I see pins sticking out of my log! I soaked it in iced water for 24 hours beginning Friday afternoon and there was no sign of any mycelium at the time . now there are these pins and mycelium at both ends of the log .. I counted 6 pins . cool !

Congratulations on the pins!
Can I ask where you got the shiitake log at? I'm interested in growing some.

I wonder if I should mist it with pins coming out of it . the paperwork that came with the log doesn't talk about that aspect of growing the log, only to keep the internal moisture at 35 percent or above .. of course you cant measure the moisture of the log

I'm not sure, it was in a somewhat dark dry spot, then the top of it started to colonize with what looked too be healthy myc, then it turned green and I never saw any pinning or anything after that.

I also took some mycelium on agar and hope to either make my own log or spawn to a mycobag with a colonized jar of shiitake . I also am going to try to make a spore print of one of these. then I am going to try portobello , then oyster and all the other edibles.

ok harvested them today 61 grams fresh . now I have to let the log rest for 30 days I will put it outside on my porch then try to refruit it . the spores dropped all over the stand I had it on .. they are white? I am trading with a guy from italy for probably an oyster wedge on agar. but here are my options P.ostreatus (wedges)
P.citrinopileatus (wedges)
F. populicula (sporeprints)
A.aegerita (sporeprints)
H.erinaceus (wedges)
G.lucidum (sporeprints)
anyone recommmend which one I should try ?
