(WCCO) State troopers who stopped a 2007 Kia Sorrento for speeding near Sauk Centre on Sunday and found 15 pounds of illegal mushrooms in the vehicle, most were packaged as phony birthday presents.
The troopers arrested Willie Jenkins, 28, and Brook Tonioli, 26, both of Myrtle Point, Oregon. Both were charged Tuesday in Todd County with two counts of first degree controlled substance violations and both are being held on $1 million bond.
The routine traffic stop for speeding on I-94 resulted in the bust around 1:50 p.m. last Sunday. The trooper called a K-9 unit after hearing conflicting stories and information from the motorists. In addition to the mushrooms, the troopers found a small amount of marijuana and seized more than $10,000 in cash.
The driver, Jenkins, was also fined for driving with a suspended license and for speeding 85 mph in a 70 mph zone.
"This is another prime example how basic traffic safety enforcement is critical to preventing drug trafficking in Minnesota," said State Patrol Captain Al Kutz.

Again, I must reiterate, obey all traffic laws when carrying drugs in your car. I've heard of way to many busts that happened because of minor traffic violations.

That's sure a shame. I didn't realize they had psilocybin-sniffing dogs. Anyone else heard of that?

i was pulled over in plymouth minnesota on the same interstate just 2 weeks ago, they thought it was kinda odd that i had a big bag of horse poo in the front seat, dog searched the car and didn't find anything, the cops did find a pill bottle full of mushrooms, i told them that i found them growing on the horse poo that i was collecting for my mother, and that she told me to throw the mushies away because they were poisonous, the cop just put them back and let me go, wonder why this dog smelled them? I suppose he gave positive identification to drugs in the car because of the weed and the mushies turned up in the search.

So these guys consented to a search they didn't have to, correct? That usually happens. People don't seem to realize they do not have to consent to a search if there is no probable cause. Of course the cops could say they smelled something or some such crap and your word is never as good as the cops. Fucked up stuff. They even train dogs to bark to be able to get probable cause for a search even if the dog didn't smell anything. These drugs laws are so fucked. It's easy to prosecute people when they are presumed guilty by everyone.

If you refuse a search they bring the dogs in. If the dogs dont give a positive then the officer signals the dog to give a false positive. Its fucked up but either way your getting searched. Better it be by a officer thinking there is a chance you have nothing, rather than a cop that is going to search every nook and cranny to turn something up (which is what they will always do if you refuse a search).
It's funny but in my younger days I would refuse searches if I had nothing on me and time to kill. They would waste all there time (and mine but i didn't really care) to find something. After about 1-2 hours I would start flipping out saying I'm being harassed when I don't have anything and just trying to protect my rights. I would make them meticulously put everything back the way I told them it was. Which was usually a ridiculous onslaught of "put that shoe box to the left, more left, left, you went to far put it to the right a little." After about 15 minutes of that they would want to get the hell out of there as bad as any potential criminal they pulled over. Just my little way of giving them a taste of their own medicine.
Unfortunately between work and sleep these days I have no more time to do this sorta thing.

dogs ARE NOT trained to smell mushrooms, this is why they got caught

the dogs signed on the pot, and probably the cash, as that kind of cash is laden with stuff being snorted thru it, and dirty hands all over it.

everyone do everyone else a favor, if you DONT have drugs in your car, act really suspicious. they cant do shit if you act like that and have nothing. its the only way to make people who do have shit safe. (theoretically...)
so do us a favor and refuse a search if you have no drugs. just to get cops in the rythem of being turned down. and dont fucking speed with 15 POUNDS of shrooms in your car! how fucking stupid do you have to be?!

It's true about false positives. You don't have to wait around for the dogs though. If they detain you longer than would reasonably required for what you are stopped for then it will be thrown out in court.
I read a news story here on that exact case. A massive amount of weed was found, but the lady had refused the search. They detained her for an hour + to get the dogs there. The court threw it out.
Quote:

Bad advice. Never consent to a search. The second you do you're fucked. How many times have we read stories where the driver consented to a search and got fucked? I can't even remember the last time I read a story where someone didn't consent and got busted.
Consenting to a search is just plain stupid, weather you have anything or not. You will be there a lot longer if you consent. Lots of times if you say no they simply send you on you're way.
Once you consent they can keep you there as long as they want. They can tear your car apart and leave you there in the rain with no tools.
Your story about making them put things back is BS in most cases. They don't have to put shit back. I complained about my sleeping bag getting unrolled in the dirt and my pillow thrown in the dirt. He did it anyway. Then I asked if he was going to roll it up again. He proceeded to tell me that he's taken people's seats out, in the rain, and left them on the side of the road with no tools before.
Never consent to a search. Once you do you've just fucked yourself any way you figure it.
A couple other points... I've seen dogs that key in on plastic pill bottles. I think they are often trained to smell out pill bottles because there's no way to train them to smell out all the different kinds of pills.
Also, driving 85 in a 70 on a MN freeway is nothing. The guy was probably just trying to go with the flow. If you drive 70 on that freeway you'll have cars passing you like zip, zip, zip, zip.
5 over is the piratical minimum you can go on that freeway. Most people do 10 over, and there are a ton of people doing 15-20 over.
Still foolish to not go the slowest speed that lets you go with the flow though.
