I need help collecting these things... and eating them. All were collected within approximately 15 minutes, in just one of my spots. Total weight is just shy of five pounds.

Those are some nice chanterelles.
Don't eat the little ones throw them in some vodka and let them steep for about a week, really good.

After they steep do i use the vodka, the chants, or both? Seems like I remember reading about this in a big european coffee table book about mushrooms. If there is enough vodka in reserve I'll give it a try.

thanks coon. There are both smooth to moderately wrinkled in the collection... i notice the fertile surface on a few specimens seemed to stain a yellowish. Maybe I'll try to get pictures of this with a future collection. If it turns out to be a consistently reproducible feature I'm sure it would be helpful for classification.
Most of these are definitely what I call lateritius. But damnit, they are confusing me with cibarius like features, pity they will all have to be eaten before arriving at a satisfactory answer.
It seems like I recall hearing about an attempt at classification of North American Cantharellus species taking place in Chicago, and apparently the botany department at the Field Museum is looking to expand their herbarium collection. I guess people aren't as inclined to deposit their favorite edibles and therefore chanterelle species are under represented... but yeah... that info was given to me by a serious splitter.
Falcon: I found about four ounces of vodka so they are steeping... I'll let you know how it tastes in about a week. I might pick up a bottle of vodka tomorrow to make a larger batch as all the local myco-people are meeting for a little mushroom nerd party over the weekend... might be fun to pass around a bottle of chanterelle flavored potato wine.

I'm done congratulating everyone on their finds until I find something worthwhile. Yep, I'm petty like that. So, blah! to you.

Drink the vodka, the immature ones in vodka give the vodka a hazelnut flavor. I just tried this and tasted the vodka, I haven't taken the chanterelles out of the vodka so, I'm not sure if they will be good for anything.

shit... dice and throw the steeped ones into a tomato based sauce (for pasta) and the vodka in them will wake up the flavor of the tomato sauce, plus you'll have chants in the sauce as well. I don't think eating them straight would be too enjoyable...

Active.
Edit: Activates your taste buds, no psilocybin.

Chanterelles are outstanding edibles. When you can get them fresh in the store (here in Denver) they usually run about $30 a pound.
lineman, that sort of humor isn't much appreciated in this forum. People get banned for it. Please don't do that any more. People actually eat (or don't) mushrooms based on recommendations made by people in this forum. So any false statement that might cause somebody to eat a mushroom can't be allowed.
Happy mushrooming!

I bet chanterelle vodka would be good in a white russian. Thinking about trying it with rum... but i'm not sure what it would be good for. a doubt a mojito made with chanterelle flavored rum would be very tasty.
