More Anti-Pot Bullshit in the News.

Mother kills herself and son, 5, with a barbecue
By JAMES TOZER

A mother killed herself and her young son while suffering from psychotic delusions caused by her regular use of cannabis.

Anjun Cavanagh, who smoked two or three joints every night, locked herself and five-year-old Dylan in a sealed bedroom where she lit a disposable barbecue.

The pair were slowly poisoned by carbon monoxide fumes as they lay surrounded by the boy's favourite toys.

An inquest revealed that 30-year-old Miss Cavanagh had become convinced her son was being abused by his father as well as fantasising that she had met Moors murderers Ian Brady and Myra Hindley and believing a 'device' had been hidden in household electrical items to give her shocks.

(From The Daily Mail)

more like she was fucking crazy to begin with. and should have been on meds for bi-polar/schizophrenia ... obviously wasnt the weed on its own.. rather that it may have sparked her already present metal disorder...

thats fucked up though

ok.... im prty sure that that delusion wasent brought on by JUST pot. i rly dont think there is any possible way. maby she was on something else too but they would just leave it out to make pot sound like a bad drug....who are these fuckers any way. she probable had a psychotic disorder too. like paranoia or something witch maaaby the pot made worse but i doubt it. ik love how they jump to the conclusion "she killed her kds oh look she smoked pot that must be it". as a posed to looking into her life and seeing if she had any problems

The world is like a ride at an amusement park and when you choose to go on it you think it's real, because that's how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and round and round and it has thrills and chills and it's very brightly colored and it's very loud. And it's fun for a while Some people have been on the ride for a long time and they begin to question: Is this real? Or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered and they come back to us and they say Hey! Don't worry don't be afraid ever because this is just a ride. And we kill those people.Shut him up! We have a lot invested in this ride! Look at my furrows of worry look at my big bank account and my family. This has to be real.

i wonder if she smoked any the day that she did all this.

regardless... this lady shouldn't have been even taking caffeine without supervision. of course... it was prolly either this or her and a hundred cats 25 years from now anyway. she was like poop looking for a fan.

Actually it's pretty clear that MJ did NOT cause her problems. She smoked 2-3 joints a night for many years and did not kill anyone. It is highly illogical to suggest that of the thousands of joints she smoked somehow that last one caused her to go on a murder-suicide rampage.

It's absurd to suggest that marijuana alone caused her to kill her kids, even more so absurd to suggest that 'the one she smoked that night pushed her over the edge', it could well have been a build up over the years.

I'm not goingto jump on the 'omg this is totalbullshit' bandwagon because there a few important things to point out.

A) If she was already psychotic, then marijuana would have been of no benefit to her.

B) Marijuana may have well triggered/nurtered a pre-existing disorder.
Although there is no real evidence out there to suggest this is happening, I think common sense alone would help people realise this.

C) There are countless people who have done things WAY more fucked up than this that never took drugs in their life.

D) Marijuana is only of real benefit for pain relief and as with all drugs/medications, should only be used if prescribed by a doctor or if you know you can handle it recreationally, and as with all drugs out there, there is a group of people who just aren't meant to handle it.

At one stage in my life I was smoking a lot of bad pot. I was in with a really dodgy drug dealer who was selling me mouldy weed. I didn't know at the time, I was young and naive. I was buying ounces at a time, so needless tosay I was sitting on them for a couple of weeks, which only made the weed get worse and worse as I was smoking it. Eventually after about a month of smoking this mouldy weed every day, I started coming to borderline paranoid schizophrenia. I hated everything, myself, the world, I was paranoid that my friends were trying to kill me (it sounds so absurd) and I was afraid to leave the house because I was convinced that this guy I knew was waiting in my neighbourhood for me to come outside so he could bash me, I couldn't sleep, and when I did sleep I'd sleep for days and wake up and feel really sick, couldn't get out of bed, no motivation to do anything, was skipping class etc.
This was all when I was 16-17. I have no pre-existing mental disorders, I was never on any other medication and after this episode (which lasted about 4 months) I had mild social-anxiety (was afraid to go out/interract with other people) for about a year, only in the past 6 months have I overcome this.

And all that just because of mouldy weed? Or just because I was smoking too much of it? I dunno, but there's strong evidence there to suggest heavy use may bring on mental illness. I'm convinced.

or maybe she was just smoking mouldy weed?

daily use can still be moderated.

daily use does not necessarily lead to or encourage mental illness. my stepfather smokes 1 joint a day of killer bud and has done for nearly 30 years, he is a respectable citizen, owns his own business, is financially stable and has no mental illness whatsoever.

However CHRONIC HEAVY use is sure to cause damage, as the brain is constantly being flooded with these chemicals, especially the new methods for growing weed which include the use and addition of harmful chemicals.

Simply put, if you are not mentally super-fit, then chronic daily use of the chron is going to be of no benefit to you. I know plenty of stoners who are absolutely fine who smoke a lot of bud, but on the same token, I know a lot of stoners that are just pathetic excuses for human beings and are indeed 'fucked up'.

Weed is not the single cause of these illnesses/events, but it definately plays a role, the only people who deny this are potheads that aren't ill (yet).

If I ever decide to kill some people, I'm gonna start going to church 3-5 times a week and leave Bible quotations at the scene of the killing, and see if they try a similar connection.

Marijuana can have negative mental effects on some people, especially those with predispositions, but the article clearly states that cannabis caused her psychosis. They said nothing about correlation.

Marijuana can cause mental issues, including a temporary reduction in short-term memory and eccentric behavior, but there is no way marijuana alone causes psychosis in normal individuals, especially at this level. There are always other factors involved, and though cannabis may exacerbate the problem, the fact is that there must already be a major problem in the first place.

What the fuck is all this spewing about weed causing mental illness?

The only effects of weed are positive. Even if a user is a total violent psychotic they only stand to benefit from weed use.

In cases like these the use of marijuana probably delayed violent results by months or years rather than causing.

"Marijuana induced psychosis" is a real condition, but it only affects people with limited MJ experience. Such as a person who hasn't smoked a whole lot of MJ smoking some really powerful weed and freaking out.

And the bullshit about moldy weed? Come on! #1 why would you buy moldy weed? #2 even if smoked it would not cause the symptoms you describe and #3 if it gave you negative effects why would you continue smoking it?

you did t read my post. i said i was young and stupid and didn't really care. i couldnt get any other weed and it was all i could get, didnt want to let the whole thing go to waste so i smoked it. didn't seem so bad so i kept buying it.

you can't tell me that during this time when i went thru the most fucked up scary psychotic shit of my life was just a coincidence? or puberty? you call paranoid delusions puberty? hormones? no. it was the fucking weed, and well, maybe the fact it was mouldy had something to do with it.

it was bad. bud.

like i said, it took me a while to figure out why i was getting so fucked up. you know shit mate, dont say that my experience is mislead because you werent fucking there jackass.
people like you piss me off who will stand defiant next to your beloved herb to the end, well sorry man, i love weed just as much as you and am all for 'legalisation' and free-for-all smoking, but the truth is, its not good for EVERYBODY and will not ONLY have POSITIVE effects, like EVERY OTHER FUCKING THING IN THIS WORLD.

exactly! i wasn't being sarcastic, except with the last statement.

saying that weed only instigates psychosis in only those who are going to become psychotic anyway is roughly as logical as saying those who smoke weed and go psychotic went psychotic because they smoked weed.

both sides are inconclusive, but they have definitely found that if you smoke allot (especially if you start in your teens), you are more likely to become psychotic than someone who doesn't smoke allot.

personally, that would scare me if i was in my teens and a daily weed smoker, even if there was no history of mental illness in my family.

there is plenty of anecdotal evidence that weed can cause at least short term psychosis in people who have no obvious predisposition towards mental problems.

why everyone on this board keeps acts like this is not true is beyond me, you're supposed to be those who know, and hopefully, you want to try and use your knowledge to keep people safe.

edit: i just noticed in the article it said she was thirty... most people who develope schizophrenia and other severe mental conditions tend to develop them in their late teens to early twenties. if you wanted you could email the author of the article and ask if she was already psychotic before she did that...
