I too get a plentiful harvest in the summer!
canning and making jams and preserves is a good idea...
also, if u find a slightly tart batch, it would be delicious mixed with sweet and made into muffins. tart berry muffins are the bomb!

If you're not a cook, I would recommend freezing them to use in smoothies and/or hot cereal during the long, berry-less winter.

I eat them fresh on my cereal or by themselves. They are in season right now, there's a gazillion of them out there, and most are still red! I just make 7 half pints of jelly, just buy pectin and follow the directions exactly... Making jelly is a messy, labor intensive and long process. ( well, sort of ) The smoothie idea is a great one! Also had some homemade blackberry/blueberry cobbler the other night. Blackberries are the leading antioxidant berry!

ask anyone from the michigan gathering and they'll tell you to make coffee cake like i did (starwanderer, kungpow, morelman or sweetsweet)... it's already been demanded by 2 people that it be made for next year and thats 11 1/2 months away!
I love to bake.... in fact i'm about to make a strawberry, blueberry and rhubarb pie
I just made one of these coffeecakes with fresh black raspberries, i also made waffles and pancakes with them this week... the recipe takes about an hour including prep and cleanup...
here's the recipe (a slight variation on the worlds best coffecake):
supplies:
9x13x2 glass baking dish 3 cups blackberries (can use any berry, my personal fav is blueberry, blackberry and raspberry combined although if using strawberry, replace half the amount with chopped rhubarb or it doesnt work as well) 2 cups sugar 4 tablespoons cornstarch 3 1/2 cups all purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 12 tablespoons cold butter 1 cup milk 1 tablespoon lemon juice 2 beaten eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon allspice 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
preheat oven to 350 degrees F
to make the berry filling:
combine fruit and 1/2 cup of water in a medium saucepan, bring to a boil, then reduce heat cook on med low for about 5 minutes stirring frequently to mash up the berries well. in a seperate container mix 1/2 cup sugar and 4 tablespoons cornstarch, stir and cook until thick and bubbly cook for about 1-2 more minuites and remove from heat, (make sure to scrape the bottom of the pan it gets stuck if you dont)....
the cake:
in a glass put 1 cup milk and add one tablespoon lemon juice (this is called making sour milk, vinegar can be substituted for lemon juice or buttermilk for sour milk altogether, lemon juice and milk is my preferred method) let this stand for 5 minutes (don't smell it lol)...
in a large mixing bowl mix 1 cup sugar, 3 cups flour, the baking soda, baking powder, allspice, cinnamon, and nutmeg... take 8 tablespoons (one stick) of cold butter and cut it into tiny cubes and mix very well with the dry mixture, until it resembles fine crumbs..
in another bowl mix beaten eggs, the sour milk that you made 5 minutes ago, and the vanilla. add this to the dry mixture...stir just til moistened...
spread HALF of the batter into the bottom of the pan... then spreda the fruit mix over that... then drop remaining batter in small mounds atop the fruit filling (similar to dumplings - see pic)
in a medium mixing bowl combine 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup flour and spinkle in some cinnamon (not too much).. cut up the remaining 4 tablespoons of cold butter into cubes like you did for making the batter and mix with the dry mix until it resembles fine crumbs... sprinkle this over the entire cake
bake on middle oven rack at 350 for 40 minutes... makes about 18-20 servings...
let cool for 15-39 minutes before serving

certainly
for the filling: (mix all and set aside covered)
1 1/2 c. sugar 3 tbsp. cornstarch 1/4 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg 1/4 tsp. all spice 3 c. rhubarb, cut into 1/2" pieces 2 c. sliced fresh strawberries 1/4 c. tapioca
for the pastry:
2 1/2 c. all purpose flour 1 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp nutmeg 1/2 tsp. all spice 6 tbsp. cold butter chopped into small pieces 4 tbsp. cold vegetable fat or shortening cut into small pieces 1/4-1/2 c. cold water\
put the flour in a large mixing bowl and add the other dry ingredients mixing very well. Add the butter and shortening and using clean hands mix together until the mixture consistently resembles fine bread crumbs. add enough cold water to bind into 2 pastry balls. wrap each in plastic wrap and cill in the fridge for 20 minutes.
preheat a baking sheet in the oven to 400 degrees F.
clean the shit out of your counter top and make some space. sue kitchen sanitizer after cleaning it and allow 1-2 minutes for the remains to evaporate after you wipe it off. sift some flour onto the cleaned counter top over a large area in a fine layer and put one of your dough balls (the largest if theres a size difference) in the center of the flour. using a rolling pin flatten out until it's slightly larger than your 8-9 inch pie dish.
how to pick up rolled dough without tearing it:
slide your left hand under the left edge of the dough (palm side up).
put right hand about two inches above the dough in the center palm side up.
flip left edge over right hand and quickly bring left hand (palm side up) across in front of body and pick up the rest of the dough with a right to left motion UNDER your right hand and quickly transfer it to the pie dish.
make sure it hangs over all edges...
add filling to the pastry
sift flour over the counter again (or spread the same flour back out with your rolling pin). roll out the second dough ball and pick up the same way and place over the filling...cut off the excess (leaving just a little over hang. cut four leaf shape holes in the center (see pics.) and eat those pieces, because you are almost finished with a damn good pie and you deserve a treat.
now using the rest of the excess (the trim from the edge), roll a new small ball and flatten cut out four more leaf shapes and roll three tiny balls...using a small knife make a kark lengthwise across the leaf shapes then two to three vein marks on both sides of the line at an angle...place these four leaf shapes evenly between the four leaf cutouts on the top layer of pastry. then place the three small balls in the center...
make sure to press the pastry together at the edge of the pie dish to so the top and bottom layers become one.
for the glaze:
beat one egg and one tbsp of water in a bowl and brush over the pie.
sprinkle lightly with cinnamon sugar (1 tsp. cinnamon to 1/2 c. sugar mixed well for those that don't have it premade although you wont need that much)
sprinkle lightly with confectioners sugar
put pie dish on the preheated baking sheet in the oven and bake for 40 minutes (at the 400 degrees F)
let cool for at least 3 hours before serving.
after it cools i like to cut off the edge (see pic) to make for easier serving.
i usually serve warmed in the microwave for 15-30 seconds with a spoonful of caramel drizzled over it and sprinkled with confectioners sugar. serve with ice cream. Mmmm...

Wow I have never had blueberry and my mom used to make wine from everything. One year I got the dubious privilege of picking enough dandelion flowers for her to try making dandelion wine. Damn was that alot of picking!

Definitely didn't taste good enough to make it worth picking all those damn flowers!
It went cloudy. Which wasn't normal for her wine. We ended up pitching it.
I would just like to mention that it takes ALOT of flowers to fill up a paper grocery bag. I was such a good daughter! (If you don't take into account all the bitching I did when I was picking them)
