First: Let's flip things around and imagine what shit the principal would have been in if she let the sign remain up.
What you're missing is that this took place off school grounds, and the guy was 18 at the time. The principal saw the banner, ran across the street off school property, and confiscated a banner from an 18 year old citizen who happened to attend high school across the street.
Maybe if this took place ON school grounds I'd buy that it is disruptive, but an adult citizen holding a banner off school property is not disruptive of school. It's just offensive to some uptight people who think any speech that bugs them should be illegal.
What the principal should have done was leave it alone. Supreme Court decisions notwithstanding, it was not in his jurisdiction and none of his business.

I've never heard anyone use the phrase "wisdom of the war on drugs" and imply that there was any. We've got one friend on the Court.
All I can say about this is that it's America and you're supposed to be able to say WHATEVER YOU WANT. I think the Founding Fathers would've considered the guy who yells "fire!" in a crowded movie theater an ass, but by God they would've respected his right to do it.

Usually, even if someone yells fire, in the absence of any corroborating evidence ie. smoke, flames, etc. etc., then it becomes the responsibility of the intelligent individual to either investigate the claim further, or dismiss it.
Just because there exists a large proportion of blind sheep in the population who would blindly believe anything yelled at them shouldn't mean that speech should be curtailed.
