Dude there is no all black and white version. Give it up! VHS has always been able to show color so why would they make a colorless VHS version of a film that's historically significant due to the fact that it's one of the first films ever to use color?!

But why did I come across a few postings on message boards from people claiming to own the all black-and-white version without the bird (they didn't sound like they were yanking anybody's chain) and what was the deal with that black-and-white clip from years ago on Snopes that I seem to remember not having a bird?

Yeah; the trailer from 1959 is online and the scene is in the trailer and it's no different than the scene in the VHSes/DVDs: just a bird.
