Nah i doubt you're able to get caught we also have secured and unsecured wireless network- for some reason its shared through neighbors and we can't seem to get rid of it, but it works just fine either way- if one goes down, more to spare...

I find the connection is usually slower when you're going off of someone else's network. Is that the case with you, hoser?

Yeah, but it beats no internet whatsoever. And it's still got decent overall speed considering I'm paying zilch.

I have a house across the street from the sorority dorms, I love dumb college bitches with unsecured access points, among other things involved with my location...I also get to eat breakfast on my couch watching the girls tennis team practice. To bad my garbage can gets kicked over at least once a month from shitheads coming home from the bar.

I'm pretty much in the same boat with you on this one (the only time I ever get online is when I'm 'stealing' it from the neighbor)
the funny thing is though that we actually have our own wireless network here at the house...but (unfortunately) it's not assigning the IP address like it's supposed to, and the guy that set this all up for us in the first place is outta fucken town right now (and won't be back until the end of the summer, no less)
so yeah - I'm riding the insecured wireless wave myself right now too

As long as it's in public domain you can access whatever you want.

I'll dig up the sources when I get around to it, but: it seems that borrowing wi-fi from an unsecured network doesn't break federal law, although I don't believe there have been any cases re: this. The law covers unauthorized access to protected networks only- as defined by statute.
Anyway, the state will still prosecute you I'm sure... Best to ask. But.... you could also get a decent directional antenna (mine is an antenna w/ USB powered network card that plugs into your usb port.) and be a block away (depending on the intervening obstacles) while looking at your internets.

From this months InformationWeek:
(In regards to a man being charged for using an internet cafe's wireless internet from his house)
"The supreme court has already ruled in similar cases that anything in the public domain is considered open. This includes garbage put to the curb, radio waves, etc."

isnt it easier to access information sent over an insecure signal?
For instance someone signing into the shroomery over such a link would 'broadcast' their password info to anyone who was smart and assholish enough to search for it?
This is opposed top an encyrpted, secure connection of course...
I leech all the time. I think it would be nearly impossible to be caught, since I can turn my wireless connection off in about half a second??
Don't think its illegal though, if anyone was going to enforce that dumb ass law it would be the isp's who want your money...

Well, anyone who was on that unsecured signal could be using a packet sniffer.
But if it's a over a router the broadcast is port specific... so... they probably wouldn't get it... if it's a WAP then they could. But odds are people aren't going to be sitting on a wireless network and just collecting information.
BUT it does happen.
That is why you sign is using SSL, though.

And if the connection is encrypted, that won't do anything except ask for a password to connect to the internet. So even if you crack the password (or even connect to it legitimately) anyone using it could still use a packet sniffer.

ill look into the SSL thing...
you're probably right, its not so popular to where I have to worry about fuckers stealing my info... but a good idea to have some means of protection.
