Stealing wireless internet...

...but it's worth it if I can finally lurk again. God, I was going into withdrawals. Also, it's not really stealing since it's an unsecured internet connection. I'm just not sure if it was intended or the guy is just really computer illiterate.

Whether it is unsecured or secured it is still a serious offense if caught. Be careful.

Yeah but if this guy is using an unsecured network aren't we assuming he does not know the basic ways of a computer and network?

Assumptions are dangerous. I leave mine unsecure every once in a while when I use my PS3 and other things. Not constantly, but it does happen.

But then how can you tell the difference between a hotspot or an unsecure connection? This place has various hotspots around.

The laws are grey on using an unsecure wi-fi signal. As far as i know no one has ever been busted by doing so..A secure signal would be more likely to be treacherous if you were caught especially if you were doing something shady..but just browsing the web on an unsecure signal shouldn't be anything to be afraid of. I do it all the time.

Ya, I don't think it's really illegal...I mean he's broadcasting a signal, you're just hooking into it. That would be like getting in trouble for listening to somebody's walkie talkie frequency.
And if you broadcast an unsecured wireless connection you kinda deserve to be missing a bit of bandwidth, ya know?

While I realize wikipedia may not be the most accurate source, you can find this information elsewhere this was just the easiest to link to. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theft_of_services

It's not as though you're actually stealing anything, though. His neighbor or whoever has the connection is broadcasting their signal. The range of their broadcast equipment reaches to this guy's house. He's using a signal that crosses onto his property.
Now if he decided to use this wireless signal to access his neighbor's computers, then the link you posted would apply.
Quite frankly it would be absolutely ridiculous to make accessing a signal broadcast into your own home illegal.

That's like saying if someone leaves their car running on your property you have the right to drive it around.
