What is this Unknown brown growth ?

This was found growing on a medium of perlite and brown rice flour. When jar was opened, it had a *very* strong odor. Slow growing.
Can cobweb be brown ? or just brown mold ?

Thank you !

Highly noxious mold. Don't inhale it, and dispose of it immediately. RR

Roger that Roger! (and biggysmall too)
Thanks for taking a look at this and responding. However, I did already take a good whiff (partly because it smelled so bad in the first place, and partly because I was scientifically curious - which thinking back on it, probably wasn't such a good idea...)
just waiting now for a good sinus infection ... hey coworkers, do any of you smell mold in the coffee? No, you don't? Oh, and this bagel smells kinda moldy too. HA !
It was isolated to one spot near the top, so hoping I dug it all out with a clean spoon and the rest of the jar can be rescued....

You shouldn't attempt to cut mold out of substrates. You also don't mix perlite and brown rice flour. You want to use vermiculite and brown rice flour. RR

Thank you for posting your comments and advice.....yes the two jars have been ceremoniously chucked. (lesson learned, time wasted).
There are no places in Las Vegas that sell vermiculite in bags smaller than 3 cubic yards - so using perlite in the meantime seemed to be the next best thing. Guess we were just too excited to get going in this. Drove literally all over town but there was nothing to be had *anywhere*.
Luckily the guy at the hydroponic store offered to break down a huge bag and sell off a portion of vermiculite in a gallon-size bag for $5.00. I'm in an apartment so storage of such a MONSTER bag is a huge problem.
Happily, the jars using vermiculite are doing quite well, which is tremendously exciting ! more photos to follow...
Thank you all so much on this !!!

if you want to be scientific about it, be scientific about it! should you ever need to smell check anything unknown (and potentially dangerous) be it in this hobby or any time... waft: hold your head still and away from it and bring the stinky air over to your face with your hand. yes its nerdy and probably overcautious most of the time, but a safe habit to be in.

Oh !!! What a great suggestion, creamcorn !
Guess I missed out on this lecture ... one of the drawbacks of taking Earth Science instead of Chemistry in high school ....
I'll be sure to modify to using this new practice in the future. Thank you !!!

Well I did the same thing you did with a verm/brf jar.
I cut it out with an exacto knife and put a little peroxide to clean the area it was in. I then put dry verm in the area I cut out ot act as a barrier. Then again, I didnt have the same mold as you did.
And i only get verm in huge bags too. Im actually halfway through with it and I havent done much. you may just want to buy a large bag and not worry for a while.
