Ron Paul, you mean? I don't know, it doesn't sound like it be a stage name. Unless he's going by the "two first names = famous" rule... you know, Elton John, Billy Joel, uh... okay, I guess there really aren't any examples that weren't 1970s pop singers. I know there are some who aren't, because I've had this conversation while drunk or tripping or somesuch.

Perhaps Ron Paul should run for a position as a 1970s pop singer instead?

Oh god, you're right! All the nation's working class just need to be told, "Get a new job." Eventually, when everyone has a new job, the 7-11 counter guy will be making $50,000/yr too. I'm so glad you're hear to give us the answers. Mr. Fuckin' Wizard, for sure. You exemplify the complete short-sightedness of the conservative/fiscal-libertarian platform. "Gosh, we wouldn't have a poverty problem in the US if everyone just got off their ass, simultaneously, and abandoned every low-income job in America. We could have three hundred million investment bankers and no store clerks or factory workers--poverty would disappear!" Again, absolute genius, I congratulate you. Please run, you've got my vote.

We're not talking about letting it fix itself--we're talking about fixing it. Which would have happened a long time ago if people with your general attitude toward the system didn't short-change it at every step.

And I hope I'm not getting financial advice from someone with an ICP reference in their name. Because that would be the icing on the fucking cake.

do u even know why social security is going bakrupt? i'll give u a five shroom rating if u can tell me and tell me how to fix it. and my name is actually a reference to scooby-doo and has nothing to do w/ icp. btw, sorry for making fun of your shitty job, but i know countless companies hiring 30-50k employees and can't seem to find people to do the work, but shitty minimum wage employees have trouble just getting their 40hrs a week.

saw him on the colbert report, was pretty interesting. i'd like to see him get more coverage, hes the first republican i've heard anything about in this race that really makes me think "hey. maybe their not all shitheads" but in all fairness i can say pretty much the same for the other side...

First I just want to thank everyone again who's taken my side on this one. I get so weary sometimes even fighting my own battles, it means a lot that people would care enough to jump into the fray on my behalf. Even if I mostly hide it when doing my job, I tend to be pretty introspective and I second-guess myself a lot, and the unexpected controversy generated by this post has definitely caused me to ruminate on whether I crossed a line or overstepped my bounds. After much consideration, taking into account all the opposing points of view, my carefully measured opinion is fuck all y'all - go hang out at Mycotopia if this thread pisses you off so friggin much. fireworks_god said it best, "It isn't a political statement, duh. It is a link to a new website created by the administrator that incidentally happens to be politically related. I see no reason to think that any user who creates a new website and requests a global sticky for a week or so to generate interest and traffic would not be accepted." He's right on the money and I'm amazed so many people have trouble with this concept. What if Anno launched a new section on Fungifun, or Geo was running a special at Soundsplinter, or Stein added a felching gallery to his gay porn site? Would you complain about that, or is your beef just with noncommercial, volunteer efforts designed to elicit positive change?

Look I'm not an idiot. I know proselytizing just breeds resentment and that's not what I'm trying to do here. I would like to get some traffic for a new site I launched, and there's some overlap with the Shroomery membership so a sticky seemed like an effective way to reach people who are interested. If you don't agree with Paul's politics that's fine, simply step away from this thread and resume your normal business. And you know what, anytime a member of the Shroomery gets involved with a good cause I'm definitely willing to work with them on promotion. But as far as I can tell nobody's bothered to do anything of the sort. I don't blame you, even with my web development experience that dinky Ron Paul site took like 12 hours to perfect. It's definitely easier to bitch and moan. But this is not the New York Times and it isn't my job to ensure your candidate gets equal coverage. Come talk to me when you have a new site and some promotional goals and see if I'm unreasonable. Until then either quitcherbitchin or else feel free to tell Hippie3 I say 'hi'.

 :handth:

Sorry, with the running string of ignorant nonsense I just had to take a stab at the name. Scooby Doo is by comparison pretty commendable.

Look, dude, you totally, totally misunderstood what I was saying about the jobs--but you can keep on misunderstanding if it means you don't have to strain your brain over it. Otherwise, keep reading.

300,000,000-odd people in America, right? Okay, now the mean wage is something like $30,000/year, if I recall--let's assume. Given that figure, it means that HALF the people in the US have jobs that make more than 30k... and HALF have jobs that pay less. Now, yes, there are job offerings to qualified people for better-paying jobs--which has nothing the fuck to do with MY job, dickweed--but there are absolutely posifuckingtively absofuckingfuckyoualutely not 150,000,000 job openings for $30,000-$50,000 jobs anywhere in the entire U.S. of A. You can choose to ignore this fact, and say "Everybody can have a job as good as you or me if they just want it bad enough", but that would make you an ignorant classist mongoloid, wouldn't it? Yes, yes, it would. And possibly a Republican. Are we done?

no, i'm not a republican. the parties have nice sounding ideas but most politicians are in it for them self, not their parties beliefs. now, even if lets say by your most valiant efforts you can only find a job flipping burgers for the rest of your life. 15% of anyone's income properly invested over the amount of time it would otherwise take to receive social security would amount to an investment income that is greater than their working income. i use the number 15% b/c that is what everyone is charged for ss. 7.5% comes from your check and the other half is payed by your boss w/o u ever even seeing it.

so what's your story, freshman in college and your professor (stereotypical liberal hippi douche) just explained everything to u?

Glad to see you hate intellectualism as much as you lack it. I don't blame you--I do spell out words like "y-o-u", which I guess means I must be the pawn of the vast liberal university conspiracy. Look, social security is partly designed to forego the investment system in order to prevent the worst effects of the sort of thing we saw in oh, say, 1929. There's a reason for that. Look, I shouldn't even bother lecturing you--you seem to know everything already without actually requiring a functional understanding of it. Moreover, this is NOT the purpose of the thread. But...

The main problem you seem to have with understanding social security, is that it is absolutely NOT a private pension or a retirement plan. It is what's generally known as "social insurance", i.e. it is a plan intended to prevent financial calamity, not a plan one is intended to rely upon for one's retirement. Funny enough, that is why people STILL have retirement investment plans despite the fact that social security currently pays.

I could go on but I don't see what good it would do, and it's mostly esoteric anyway. In short: social security is founded on the principle that a society is healthier and stronger if a large portion of its members are not susceptible to extreme poverty. In that sense, this is what you call liberalism, and everything you hate about it. Sorry!

He was snippeted on NPR today, explaining that those deemed legally insane (by a court, not just by a psychiatrist) shouldn't be on any sort of list to prevent them from buying handguns because it would be a violation of the right to bear arms. No, this is not a misquote. The legislation to forward the requirement of a list was supported by a majority of Republicans, as I understand, and several Republicans responded curtly to Paul's statements.

Glad to see he doesn't take the second amendment stuff too far. Funny enough, I don't see how letting those indicated psychologically unstable by a court has anything to do with a "well-regulated militia".

Um, no, that would be the *median* wage. The mean wage is probably much higher (but lacking a dog in this fight, I don't care enough to Google it).

Actually the median wage would be what I'm going for, since I'm looking for a "half the people make less than this amount" figure. Yeah: oops. Haven't done anything statistical in years and years.

In case anyone's curious, the mean income is actually $37,440 (Forbes), but that's not the figure that we're looking for. Can't find median for the life of me (not even available at census.gov, as far as I can tell), but as above poster said it is certain to be considerably lower than mean. I think $30,000 was probably a generous estimate.

Vote Ron Paul, he's an american, not a politician.
