I think that's a false analogy VoidOfsPg. A closer analogy would be if the eharmony folk advertised their site on a third party site, say Shroomery, and there wasn't a facility for others to similarly advertise their site (or if there was).
I'm happy for Ythan to support his candidate on his website (and even if I wasn't that has nothing to do with me), good for him. I'm just concerned that by advertising it through a sticky on all the shroomery forums it's setting a precedent which may need to be managed lest it be used by anyone with a favoured political candidate.

I agree from a strictly managerial sense that it is rather bad policy to make it a sticky on all forums.

Yes, because every single homosexual individual in the world has joined a class action lawsuit and gives a damn about eHarmony. Seriously, every one--in the closet and out.
Sorry, is that not what you meant? I guess you were referring instead to the secret, representative homosexual conspiracy... you know, in alliance with the Twelve Jews on the Moon who control everything.

Chill--talking about the group of generally politically-uneducated people posting in excited response to this thread. I would be incredibly surprised if half the people exciting themselves over this are actually registered Republicans in the first place.
In short: Why does a candidate who has less than one percent of the Republican Party's vote in the primaries have a complete lock on the Shroomery Republicans?
i was never upset or not chillin ;-) you're cool in my book i just didnt know what you meant! haha now i know exactly what you mean and i think you got a good point. everywhere i've seen ron paul mentioned or discussed it's the same thing lol

I'm just saying users shouldn't be allowed to abuse privilege to make a statement when other users cannot, unless the organization itself advocates it.
I understand you, you mean a shroomery supported candidate backed by the shroomery as an organisation but without individual members able to use the shroomery to support their individual preferred candidates, even if it's the same person as the shroomery supports. Apart from the last bit it's a little like the situation with newspapers and reporters - a newspaper may have a preferred candidate or party it supports (particularly if its owned by Rupert Murdoch) but reporters can't use the paper to advocate their own supporter.

Because I might have to check that out). Magical thinking.
BUT this thread is supposed to be about that candidate who won't get elected or even seriously considered for nomination, so I guess we should keep it on topic.
magical thinking is thinking social security is going to fix itself if left alone. that is why it is now facing bankruptcy. now for a lesson in money. if u are not making 30-50k a year, get a new job. next lesson, after u get that job, start investing 15% of that income into a well balanced mutual fund portfolio and u will make 10%. if u and your wife do this for 20 years, yall will have about a million. if u do it for 30 years, it will turn into about 2.4 mil. when u have your degree in finance or become a certified financial planner, i will gladly argue some more w/ u.

It isn't a political statement, duh.
It is a link to a new website created by the administrator that incidentally happens to be politically related.
I see no reason to think that any user who creates a new website and requests a global sticky for a week or so to generate interest and traffic would not be accepted.

Yeah, that would make sense.

It isn't a user; it is an administrator, the site owner, and it isn't abuse.

That's like coming into someone's house and telling them to re-arrange their furniture. I can't stand people like that.
Ythan can do as he likes!
(Except to the extent that he may be blacklisted in Australia, of course.)

Oh god, you're right! All the nation's working class just need to be told, "Get a new job." Eventually, when everyone has a new job, the 7-11 counter guy will be making $50,000/yr too. I'm so glad you're hear to give us the answers. Mr. Fuckin' Wizard, for sure. You exemplify the complete short-sightedness of the conservative/fiscal-libertarian platform. "Gosh, we wouldn't have a poverty problem in the US if everyone just got off their ass, simultaneously, and abandoned every low-income job in America. We could have three hundred million investment bankers and no store clerks or factory workers--poverty would disappear!" Again, absolute genius, I congratulate you. Please run, you've got my vote.
We're not talking about letting it fix itself--we're talking about fixing it. Which would have happened a long time ago if people with your general attitude toward the system didn't short-change it at every step.
And I hope I'm not getting financial advice from someone with an ICP reference in their name. Because that would be the icing on the fucking cake.

First I just want to thank everyone again who's taken my side on this one. I get so weary sometimes even fighting my own battles, it means a lot that people would care enough to jump into the fray on my behalf. Even if I mostly hide it when doing my job, I tend to be pretty introspective and I second-guess myself a lot, and the unexpected controversy generated by this post has definitely caused me to ruminate on whether I crossed a line or overstepped my bounds. After much consideration, taking into account all the opposing points of view, my carefully measured opinion is fuck all y'all - go hang out at Mycotopia if this thread pisses you off so friggin much. fireworks_god said it best, "It isn't a political statement, duh. It is a link to a new website created by the administrator that incidentally happens to be politically related. I see no reason to think that any user who creates a new website and requests a global sticky for a week or so to generate interest and traffic would not be accepted." He's right on the money and I'm amazed so many people have trouble with this concept. What if Anno launched a new section on Fungifun, or Geo was running a special at Soundsplinter, or Stein added a felching gallery to his gay porn site? Would you complain about that, or is your beef just with noncommercial, volunteer efforts designed to elicit positive change?
Look I'm not an idiot. I know proselytizing just breeds resentment and that's not what I'm trying to do here. I would like to get some traffic for a new site I launched, and there's some overlap with the Shroomery membership so a sticky seemed like an effective way to reach people who are interested. If you don't agree with Paul's politics that's fine, simply step away from this thread and resume your normal business. And you know what, anytime a member of the Shroomery gets involved with a good cause I'm definitely willing to work with them on promotion. But as far as I can tell nobody's bothered to do anything of the sort. I don't blame you, even with my web development experience that dinky Ron Paul site took like 12 hours to perfect. It's definitely easier to bitch and moan. But this is not the New York Times and it isn't my job to ensure your candidate gets equal coverage. Come talk to me when you have a new site and some promotional goals and see if I'm unreasonable. Until then either quitcherbitchin or else feel free to tell Hippie3 I say 'hi'.

Yeah, I think only one guy was seriously pissed off about it, and he was completely out of line in the extent to which he took it. I, on the other hand, will add my two cents to any off-topic post on any thread I find, when it gets right down to it at 5am. 'Grats to you for being involved, and I mean that.
Even if it won't do any good. Bah ha ha ha... ah... eh, yeah. Right, just kidding. *cough*
