why even bother with peyote when there are other cactus species that are not only more prolific producers of mescaline but also legal and unregulated?

Because it is an interesting species and it is threatened.
I've personally sent williamsi from myself in Norway to myself in the States. Absolutely no problems. Its just a fucking catcus, you understand? 
I mean, how did you know that the ornamental catcus you were buying because of its beauty was illegal?

I once bought 5 buttons off of ebay. 
Cant get them from there anymore though..

these cactus are mainly for collection purposes, i do plan to mix a button or two with my pedro/peruvianus/bridgesii...but i just love peyotes beauty too much that i cannot pass it up.
