Large, Poisonous Lizard Terrorises Florida Neighborhood

WEST PALM BEACH, FL -- Florida wildlife officials are on the lookout for a massive monitor lizard.

The water monitor was spotted wandering around the streets of West Palm Beach over the weekend.

It is estimated to be 6 to 7 feet and about 75 pounds.

Water monitors are a carnivorous species from Asia.

They're the 3rd largest lizards in the world.

Deron Hartman with the Busch Wildlife Sanctuary says water monitors are usually afraid of people but it's best to keep a close eye on your small children and pets.

Do not attempt to corner the animals or trap them yourselves.

"They will whip with their tails like alligators do and a lizard that size is very capable of slicing you pretty good. Also capable of probably breaking your leg if he hit your leg in the right spot."

Hartman says most people buy the lizards as babies and don't realize how big they can get.

heres another article on the subject....

An African monitor, thought to have been a pet that either escaped or was released, is eluding capture and roaming a Central Florida neighborhood. Most recently the elusive lizard was spotted near a pond.

African monitors are amongst the largest lizards alive today. They have strong jaws and a potentially poisonous bite. In addition they have very sharp claws and can run as fast as 60 mph.

"We just want him to be caught because they say he is very dangerous and he has a deadly bite. We don't want him around all of the children who here," (sic) said local resident Ilene Gothelf.

It was reported by Local News 6, and I had to email every email there and complain to them that monitor lizards cannot run over 60mph, are not deadly venomous, and that they should be ashamed of themselves for lying about such things just to invoke fear in their readers and viewers for better ratings.

Poor monitor... come to Nevada, I'll take care of you. :O

We have two baby water monitors at the reptile store where i work lol. They are feisty little bastards. I bet the lizard they have running the streets are savannahs or niles or something, people always exagerate when it comes to large reptiles.
I bet that incident gave a few of the residents a taste of life in a place where all the native predators haven't been obliterated

Wow to think I just refered to a six foot lizard walking around in your neighborhood in my intorduction thread, he likely speaks and understands Dutch.

Haha, that link says he can run up to 60mph. For some reason I find that unlikely.
